  • Some of my favorite memories with my father were watching Cowboys game with Pat Summerall doing play-by-play.  Another part of my childhood died yesterday.  That man had some dark skeletons in his closet and thankfully he was able to put them behind him.  I always was surprised at how long he lived after that liver transplant.
  • Here’s Fox Sports’ website tribute to the broadcasting icon.  In one clip he talks about coaching Burt Reynolds at Florida State.  And just for due diligence, here’s what CBS Sports and the NFL put together.  Oh, and his actual name was George Allen Summerall.
  • I can only imagine the security precautions that will take place next week when five U.S. Presidents are at the opening of the George W. Bush Presidential Library next week at SMU.  I wonder if any would feel moved to visit the Kennedy Memorial, I doubt it.  But can you imagine any of them taking a picture on the grassy knoll or on the x.
  • Here’s an interesting thought, what if Bush decided to build his library at Baylor, which was definitely in the running?  That would mean former President Clinton would have to be greeted by Ken Starr, the current president of Baylor.
  • It was pretty sweet of the Yankees to honor Bostonians with “Sweet Caroline” last night.  Because of my friend Jimi, I was able experience the magic of that song in Fenway during the seventh-inning stretch.  But in watching last night’s clip, you can tell Yankee fans were out of their element.
  • When events like a bomb exploding in Boston with the first reported death being an eight-year-old boy or the tragedy of the Sandy Lake Elementary shooting happens, I refuse to believe everything happens for a reason. Sometimes crazy unfortunate shit happens, it how we deal with it that matters.
  • It almost feels like September 2001 all over again.  A major U.S. city has a tragic event and then poison is being sent in the mail to Congress.
  • I don’t think I’ve seen anyone with a smartphone and not have some kind of cover, so I always question when writers review a new smartphone and they criticize the appearance.
  • Speaking of smartphones, I’ve mentioned that the Samsung Galaxy Note II has my attention, and I’m quite surprised at all the price ranges for this phone, all of which include a 2-year contract.  Sprint sells the phone in store for $300, Best Buy for $300HSN for $280,  Costco for $230, and Amazon for $150.  It pays to shop around, and I don’t think I’ll be buying a phone in-store again.

  • Now that’s an idea – a chocolate chip cookie cone
  • Faith Hill will no longer be a part of NBC Sunday Night Football.
  • Mark Walberg was on Kimmel last night and stated some crazy weight loss and gain stats for four movies he did last year.  For the first movie he was 165 lbs, ending up weighing 212 lbs for another movie, and then in 30 days went down to $180 lbs.

  • I’m thankful tragic events which happened in Boston yesterday doesn’t happen often, but I’m surprised they don’t happen more often in these days and times.  And these sort of things get your attention more and more either the older you get or when you start a family.
  • When such an event happens, I wonder if the local news stays on the air or if everything just goes to national coverage in the area.
  • Google did a really great public service by creating a webpage to help track down people in Boston yesterday.
  • There are some truly horrific images made available online after the bombing, and I was tempted to provide a link to them, but after some thought it wouldn’t be respectful to the victims.  But if you really want to find them, they aren’t that hard to find.
  • One image that did stick with me was seeing men in fatigues, I’m guessing they were part of the National Guard helping with the event, step right into rescue and assistance mode the second things happened.
  • ’60 Minutes’ had a segment about Marfa, TX.  There was a part of me that just wanted to pack the wife and kids and hop in the car and escape back to small town Texas immediately.  But with most things, after a few days I’d probably be driven crazy.
  • I read that North Texas was going to have a great bluebonnet season, but so far I ain’t seeing it.
  • There is something really beautiful and majestic about a West Texas sunset.
  • The more ads I hear from the former George DeJohn on The TICKET the more skeptical I become.
  • The Dallas Morning News talked to former President George W. Bush about his paintings, he said, “People are surprised. Of course, some people are surprised I can even read.”

Local Radio News

Greg “Greggo” Williams, co-host of RAGE Radio on KRLD/105.3 FM “The Fan,” announced about an hour ago via Twitter that he has been fired from the station.

“ATTENTION FanFans…I just got fired by station…not much reason given..but now I’ve been fired by all three sports station,” tweeted Williams, who has also worked for KTCK/1310 “The Ticket” and KESN/103.3 FM ESPN Radio.

Thinking this might be a stunt, I contacted a Fan spokesperson, who confirmed that Williams is no longer with the station.

After Williams’ tweet, I went to the Fan website to see if RAGE was renamed, since it gets its name in part from the first initials of its co-hosts, Greggo and Richie Whitt. The show was nowhere to be found on the site. The station spokesperson confirms that yes, Whitt and the show are gone, too.

  • I’m just a casual golf fan, heck, probably not even that, so I’ve never had a real appreciation for The Masters, but I always liked their logo, especially how the flag in the hole is in Georgia.
  • “Fore” the longest time I thought The Masters was played in Augusta, Maine.
  • Augusta National must have made a killing on selling umbrellas, it looked like 98% of the crowd had the same green and white version.
  • I found it hard rooting for Adam Scott for two reasons – his use of the long putter, and it’s just hard to rood for a old man with his son caddying for him as was the case with runner-up Angel Cabrera.
  • Jim Nance actually used the term “moxie” during his coverage of The Masters.  Apparently he and Bob Costas is in a bit of a spat.
  • Weird, and it’s not even an article from The Onion – Man shoots himself in the head during NRA 500 at Texas
  • I think the difference between a flip-flop and a sandal is that the flip-flip has that piece that goes in-between the toes.  And even if that’s not the case, for the first time since my childhood I have footwear with that piece that goes in-between the toes.
  • I use to keep a two-dollar bill in my wallet at all times, just so I can say that I was never without money.  Somewhere along the line I stopped doing that.
  • I heard three different comedians make a joke about how people are too busy recording a moment with their camera or smartphone instead of actually witnessing the moment.
  • Pen and Teller were in town and took a picture on the grassy knoll.
  • Why isn’t Moses Fleetwood Walker credited with breaking the color barrier in professional baseball?
  • I’m quite interested in the large smartphone that some have started to call a phablet – half phone half tablet.  That Samsung Galaxy Note II has my attention, and some people have cases that double as a wallet.
  • It will be interesting to see how Microsoft is doing a decade from now.  I have a feeling they will still do well with businesses because for a lot of work, you just need to use something with a keyboard, but more and more folks are just relying on tablets and phones, a market they’ve struggled with.  Not to mention, laptops with a Windows operating system are in steep decline.
  • The Rangers have a new commercial that talks about busting the crowd wave.
  • Sad Josh Hamilton Tumbler [Thanks, Richard!]
  • Google Now is kinda neat, but a bit big brotherish.
  • My good friend Jimi had his birthday yesterday.  He reminds you that was the day Lincoln got shot and the Titanic hit the iceberg.  And in case you were curious about the spelling, he was named after Jimi Hendrix.  Oh, if you are female and what men could consider ‘smoking hot’, he’s interested.
