Random Sonic Thought

I went to Sonic for lunch to try the new double meat patty melt, which I highly recommend by the way, and I’m starting to notice that just about every Sonic now has the credit/debit card machine at every ordering stand.  I bet the car hops don’t like those machines since it hurts the chances of them getting a tip.  You know, a lot of times when you get change back you just give it to the car hop, but if there isn’t any change due to a credit/debit card payment – there’s no change and no tip for the car hop.  Which brings up another question . . . should the car hops get a tip?  All they do is bring me my food and are doing their job, they aren’t really waiting on me like a restaurant.  I end up tipping them out of guilt for some reason.  It’s not like I tip anyone at McDonalds or Chick-fil-A.

I try to give them a dollar when they bring my food. Most of the car hops at our local Sonic are high school kids, some of them are saving for college.

While my wife was in school she worked at Sonic. She could make more there than she could anywhere else.

When I found out that most of them make $6+ then I stopped tipping. A waiter/waitress makes a little over $2 and they refill drinks and check up on you constantly. Big difference.

I always give them something usually a dollar

Great observation. Let me support it with my own personal experience: When I pay with cash, which is rare now that they have the credit card machines, I usually give my carhop a tip. When I use my card, as is more often the case now, I don’t.

BTW, the Super Sonic Breakfast Burrito is excellent, as are the limited-time-only cheesecake bites!

Man, $6/hr still isn’t enough to support a family or pay for books if you’re in college. Not even close. I’d say tip ’em, tip ’em freely and generously. What’s it going to cost you, maybe $20 extra per year?

    Buncha scrooges ’round here 😉

I tip a buck or change if it’s almost a buck. They do serve you. Maybe not as much as a regular restaurant but they do serve you. Especially this time of year guys! Don’t be cheap at Christmas!

  8. Given your recent posts about double meat patty melts and breakfast tacos, you will soon be in a cholesterol crisis. You can’t take it with you, so you may as well give it away!!!!

Most of the Sonics around here give you the drive-thru option. Should I tip the girl who takes my money and then hand her a buck to tip the cook and then another dollar to tip the gal who made my cherry limeade? But man, I love those cheesy tots.
