Jesus Statue Burns to Ground

MONROE, Ohio – A six-story-tall statue of Jesus Christ with his arms raised along a highway was struck by lightning in a thunderstorm Monday night and burned to the ground, police said.

The “King of Kings” statue, one of southwest Ohio’s most familiar landmarks, had stood since 2004 at the evangelical Solid Rock Church along Interstate 75 in Monroe, just north of Cincinnati.

The lightning strike set the statue ablaze around 11:15 p.m., Monroe police dispatchers said.

The sculpture, 62 feet tall and 40 feet wide at the base, showed Jesus from the torso up and was nicknamed Touchdown Jesus because of the way his arms were raised, as though reaching out to catch a football. It was made of plastic foam and fiberglass over a steel frame, which is all that remained early Tuesday.

    Hello there Mr. Geeding.

Hopefully it will be remembered as "Lightning Rod Jesus". Can't say it didn't save a family from that bolt (can't say it did, either, but I choose to believe in miracles). Had that bolt not been coaxed from the sky a split second early, who knows what path the charge would have found?

It is interesting to see what people decide to think and say about this in the comments around the internet. What a fun flame war this is going to be for a little while! I am pasting my thoughts above in some of them, hoping it'll make someone think. Perhaps that perspective could lead someone to "knock at the door".

Thanks for the opportunity to say something somewhat public yet anonymously.

It feels so wrong to laugh on this one but it does remind me of one Sunday School lesson to not make any idols in the likeness of God. Sort of the same reason I think I'm the only Catholic that doesn't do the rosary – I'll pray but I prefer to determine the direction. I suppose God was sending a friendly reminder on that one. But, I'm not judging…because then I'm breaking some other lesson. Geez…the life of a Christian.

    Another foreshadowing of the Apocalypse?

as a native of Ohio..here is a song about that statue…be aware, they are making fun of the statue and it is a bit irreverent…but funny.
