  • I took the family to the only Sub Zero Ice Cream store in the area, which is in Hurst.  That’s where they make the ice cream right in front of you by using liquid nitrogen and mixing cream and other ingredients, and get to see a cloud of cold stuff overflow from the counter.  The kids weren’t as impressed as I thought they’d be, and the ice cream seemed a bit chunky since they freeze it right in front of you and hand mix it.  As for taste, it was okay, I’d rather make a trip to Marble Slab or DQ to get a Blizzard.  I also didn’t think the staff was all that friendly or helpful.
  • ESPN used Beth Mowins to do the play-by-play announcing for their television broadcast on Saturday.  It was the first time I heard a woman broadcast a football game.  I’ll admit it was a bit of an adjustment for me though she was just fine in her job.  Little did I know, but she’s the second woman to do play-by-play for the NFL, though it was on radio. That article states Gayle Sierens was the first woman to provide play-by-play, but it was three decades ago.

A movie clip that always makes me smile

As Disney fans, we loved the live action and animated movie Enchanted, and you can still catch us singing the songs from time to time.  I’ve heard it described as a parody and love letter to all the Disney classics.   It’s hard to believe the movie is eight years old, but now a sequel with the original main cast seems to be around the corner.

I love this scene and song from the movie.  Central Park was a fantastic location and the choreography (of probably over a thousand people total) is fantastic.  Per IMDB, the five-minute scene took 17-days to shoot.  This song made me fall in love with Amy Adams. Though I do have a thing for Jodi Benson’s singing in The Little Mermaid.  Maybe I have a thing for redheads and not know it. She has a cameo in the movie as well.

So here you go, start your weekend with a smile.

Padres to convert Petco Park into nine-hole golf course

The San Diego Padres have done some creative things outside of baseball to attract customers and potential fans to their ballpark. Add golf to the list of special events booked at Petco Park.

The Padres, in partnership with Callaway Golf, have announced The Links at Petco Park, a nine-hole golf “experience” taking over the stadium from Nov. 5-8. Golfers can pay a fee to take shots onto the playing field from various tees along a temporary course designed inside the venue.

  • I laughed pretty hard yesterday when I heard Craig Miller of The TICKET playfully ask a question about the actor that played Tatu on ‘Fantasy Island’ – “Was he the one that played Short Round in the Bond movies?” – There are so much pop-culture inaccuracies in that sentence (confusing the midget actor for the Indiana Jones child character with the Bond villain Oddjob), but at the same time, it’s almost something you’d think a grandparent would say.
  • Speaking of ‘Fantasy Island’, there’s going to be a remake.  This one will have a female lead and be based in San Francisco.  Here are a few things I pulled from Wikipedia about the show while trying to refresh my memory about it:
    • I forgot there was a lot of mystery behind the Mr. Roarke character, sometimes hinting he was either God, Satan, or immortal.
    • Each guest paid $50,000 (about $196,000 in 2014 dollars) in advance for the fulfillment of their fantasies, but sometimes exceptions were made and it was free, or they thought they won the fantasy in a contest.
    • Tatu wasn’t part of the last season and was basically replaced by the man that played Mr. Belvedere.
    • Aaron Spelling admitted the original pitch was a joke
    • ABC wanted Orson Welles for Mr. Roarke
    • Full episodes are on YouTube.
    • It was revived in 1998 with  Malcolm McDowell as the lead role.
  • That article about the ‘Fantasy Island’ remake also states that CBS will have a Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn series based on modern times.
  • When it comes to cleaning my gas grill, I fear the wire brush bristle flying off and then accidentally getting stuck in my food and digested.  Other than cleaning the grates with a ball of aluminum foil, I don’t know of any alternatives.
  • Texas Monthly – The Top 25 New and Improved BBQ Joints in Texas – When I first read the article I was shocked Pecan Lodge wasn’t on the list, and then I realized I failed to actually read the words “New and Improved” in the title.  I visited Cattleack Barbecue last week, and it’s on the list.  Both Austin and DFW have five that makes this list.

  • Imgur – Frustrated with the current field of presidential candidates (particularly on the GOP side), my Anglophile friend wrote a trolling letter to the Queen, asking her to take the US back. To our shock, they actually dignified him with a response.‏
  • I like this example Wikipedia uses for Simpson’s paradox – In both 1995 and 1996, Justice had a higher batting average than Jeter did. However, when the two baseball seasons are combined, Jeter shows a higher batting average than Justice.
  • D.C. church says a bike lane would infringe upon its constitutional ‘rights of religious freedom’
  • When reading this article, the following sentence stopped me down and made me question if the word “former” shouldn’t have been included.  – A former Tarleton State University professor resigned after a report that he participated in a ritual in which he pierced his pectorals and hung from a tree in the presence of students. – I think  “former” makes it redundant and confusing.  The professor only becomes “former” after he resigns.  To me, it reads as if a professor that once taught there resigned; however, he would have to actually be working there in order to resign which wouldn’t make him a former professor.  Gosh, I’m confusing myself trying to explain it.  As you know, English and grammar is not my strong suit, I relate with Ralph Wiggum.
