Bag of Randomness for Friday, March 3, 2017

  • Last night’s ‘Diff’rent Strokes’ was the one which Kimberly washed her hair with rain water that was collected in a copper bowl. The rain water had a high acid content and turned her hair green.
  • Because of my role as a contractor with the federal government, a background check on me occurs every five years. Yesterday I had to meet an investigator from the U.S. National Background Investigations Bureau, formerly the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Not only did my investigator look straight out of central casting, he looked like a brother either of Jason Garrett or Damian Lewis (‘Homeland).
    • He had to contact three references I provided about my character. I had to know each for at least ten years.
    • A while back, I had to fill out a form and list my last ten years of employment (with contacts of previous managers), addresses, travel out of the country, and other like things. Yesterday, the interview went over all the data I provided to see if there was any inconsistency with what I provided. I also had to provide a lot of details about my family in Vietnam I was actually unsure about. Actually, there were more questions about my family in Vietnam than I was asked five years ago.
    • I asked if his job has changed with the new administration, and his reply was, “Greatly.”
    • The investigator is forty-three years old but told me about his career which started in the Army. Three years ago, at the age of forty, he decided to join the Air National Guard and had to go to boot camp (he later attended Officer Candidate School). He entered camp at 195 lbs and left weighing 155 lbs. He talked about how he might not as been as physically fit as all the 18-22-year-olds but his maturity and good habits of an adult, and the ability to see the bigger picture in things, were a huge advantage. Something else which stood out, he said along with “regular” food there were “healthy” food options which he really appreciated and took advantage of.
  • Current White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer was once the Easter Bunny (yup, that was him inside the costume) for one of President George W. Bush’s Easter rolls.
  • And it was an AOL account – Pence used personal email for state business — and was hacked
    • Vice President Mike Pence routinely used a private email account to conduct public business as governor of Indiana, at times discussing sensitive matters and homeland security issues.

    • For a while, I wanted this kind of funeral, but don’t like the idea of the raft breaking apart, the fire going out, and my body parts floating all over the place. I’d rather it be burned completely like Darth Vadar set on the pyre.
  • Funny bit – London Theater Pranks Audience by Playing ‘La La Land’ at ‘Moonlight’ Screening
  • The Oscars Stage Manager Tells All, Says He Was Stunned by PwC Accountant Incompetence
    • “I was in the wings stage left with Jimmy [Kimmel] when they announced La La Land. We watched for about 10 more seconds, and during that entire time Martha was no more than five feet away from us. When La La Land was announced, she did not try to get my attention, she did not say anything. And she’s supposed to have memorized the winners.”
    • “She was standing there with the envelope in her hand, very low-key,” he said of Ruiz. “And John Esposito said that Brian was very low-key too, no urgency. But we had Martha open the envelope, and it said Moonlight.”
    • “I still do not understand the delay,” Natoli told TheWrap. “Brian should have run out there on his own. Martha should have run out there.
  • This comes on the heels of the Texas Rangers opening a preliminary investigation –  Art Briles defends himself in letter, denies cover-up of sexual assaults at Baylor
    • “Despite the insistence of certain people, I can remain silent no longer,” begins the statement. “There is an onslaught of information coming out in the press that is inaccurate, misleading and unfair to Baylor, its amazing students, its strong faculty, the administration and its athletic programs.”
    • Briles also addressed text messages between him and other Baylor officials regarding player misconduct that were released following a lawsuit against the school. “Rumor, innuendo and out of context messages, emails and comments have no place in a true fact-finding mission. The key to growth for the school begins with full transparency, not selective messaging. To participate, or worse yet, instigate such, is unfair to the victims, the accused, the programs and all of Baylor Nation.”
  • Mulkey sat silent with tears in her eyes for a long time, as she talked about her comments on camera for the first time since telling Baylor fans that if people tell them they will never send their daughters to the school, they should “knock them right in the face.”
  • Bob Sturm of The TICKET and a Liberty University alum had some interesting thoughts for Baylor faithful on Wednesday in regards to the latest football player being suspended.
    • “This is a deal where you should probably sit out. You should probably bite your tongue, your school pride, your season tickets, your sweatshirt. Because I’m somebody who doesn’t think that your school needs to be forever humiliated necessarily, but definitely not shut down and all the students should be chased away. I don’t believe that. I really don’t. I think a Baylor education can be exactly what you want it to be, from henceforth and the odds of something like this happening again are probably very low, despite the fact I swear ten years ago we just had a Baylor scandal.”

Bag of Randomness for Thursday, March 2, 2017

  • Right before bedtime, DaughterGeeding showed me her autobiography she started to wright. I told her that’s nice and all, but the best part is that she has a big part in choosing how it ends.
  • Tony Romo joined Instagram yesterday. His first post was a video of his older son throwing the ball to his younger son. I won’t spoil the ending for you if you want to watch.
  • I’ve written about the “Johnson Treatment” several times, and that was the first thing I thought of when I saw this picture of President Trump. Granted, it only captures a brief moment in time and a single image can be taken out of context, but it was the first thing that popped in my mind.
  • A little dated but relevant to the above bullet point, here‘s Bryan Cranston transforming into LBJ on ‘The Tonight Show’ giving Jimmy Fallon “The Johnson Treatment”.

Bag of Randomness for the first day of March 2017

  • I’m always surprised when Trump doesn’t wear a red tie for a big occasion. But the next time he speaks to Congress, Vice President Pence and Speaker Ryan need not wear matching ties, it looked a little weird, like they were auditioning for the sequel to Step Brothers.
  • Going into the speech I knew I was going to disagree with a certain amount of content, but I was curious how he would deliver it, how “presidential” he would appear, and if he’d stray from the text and adlib. Regarding all that, he exceeded my expectations for the most part, but as he got comfortable, he started being Trump again but not to the extent most of us are accustomed.
  • Maybe it was my television, but last night Justice Kennedy looked very yellow, which made me think of possible liver issue. But then again I could have been Justice Breyer, I don’t know my justices very well.
  • I continue to think the opposing party response to the State of the Union, or in this case, an address to a joint session of Congress, is stupid.
  • What’s in Subway’s chicken? Hint: Maybe only 50% chickenSubway says its chicken should be 99% chicken and is looking into it.

  • Baylor suspends DB Travon Blanchard after protective order issued
    • “Immediately upon notification on Feb. 7, the appropriate campus student-conduct process was initiated and Blanchard was suspended indefinitely from all team related activities, pending the outcome of the investigation,” Baylor director of athletic communications David Kaye said, per John Carroll and Mikel Lauber of KWTX. Blanchard has been accused of multiple acts of abuse, dating back to at least last July.
      • Baylor was notified three weeks ago, so I’m guessing it takes that long for the suspension to go into effect. Either that or Baylor sat on this information and decided to release it a little before President Trump’s first address to a joint session of congress to avoid the media spotlight.
      • Baylor Head Women’s Basketball Coach Kim Mulkey, Feb 25, 2017 – “Move on. Find another story to write.
        • That’s got to tear her up on the inside after standing up for her university and then finding out the school was notified about this almost three weeks prior. But as she said, “I’m tired of people talking on it on a national scale that don’t know what they’re talking about. If they didn’t sit in those meetings and they weren’t a part of the investigation, you’re repeating things that you’ve heard.
        • She really is turning into the Kellyanne Conway of Baylor.
