Ah, welcome back football. It’s official now. Even though I wasn’t looking forward to the Chiefs celebrating their Super Bowl win, I liked their brief ceremony. Basically, huge banners representing their previous Super Bowl championship teams with a living team member were introduced. I’m a sucker for honoring the past.
Cowboys tight end John Stephens Jr. is the lowest-paid member of this year’s team, earning $796,000 for the 2024 NFL season. That’s almost 12 times the average Texans’ salary, $67,321.
I posted about this place recently. This is the future of watching sporting events. They are not at Kyle Field; they are in a sports theater. I saw general admission tickets for this week’s Texas vs Michigan game for $22, but reserved tickets as high as $700.
The fact it took me real seconds to realize this was @cosmdallas and not actually Kyle Field is wild. Game watching here looks ELITE.
Peters’ Halloween setup normally begins each year in the second week of August. However, this year it became more important than ever to get a head start on the display because her husband has cancer.“You could’ve come to me and said something like, ‘Hey, why?’ and I would’ve explained to them why I did it so early,” Peters said.According to Peters, the Halloween display in her yard takes more than 100 hours to complete and take down. She says for seven years, she’s been building and changing the display, which is free for people to walk through and enjoy. But this year the city has contacted her twice about complaints regarding it.
My faith teaches me to forgive. I want to forgive, but I just don’t know how. For instance, I don’t think I can ever forgive Mike Ditka for not calling a play that allowed Walter Payton to score a touchdown in his only Super Bowl.
The name of the intramural team I played on in college when we won the flag football championship was Ditka’s Kids. This was around 1996, and we kept a picture of him on the sidelines. I still have the t-shirt.
Goodsurf is a long-anticipated restaurant and bar with a Citywave wave pool for patrons to test their surfing skills, plus pickleball courts in case you get tired of wiping out on the waves.
I ran across this the other day researching WWII stuff and mental health:
My grandfather was held in solitary confinement by the Japanese during World War He found it extremely debilitating and later said that he would have lost his mind had not one of the guards given him a box of sewing pins. There were 100 pins in the box and every morning he would throw the contents over his shoulder into his cell. He would then spend the rest of the day finding pins. He said that was the only thing that kept him sane.
Beckett was then shot and dragged out of his car. As the carjacker drove off, they ran also ran over the veteran, who ultimately died from his injuries.
That man is probably safer behind bars, but many people want to ensure that he receives their definition of justice.
I somewhat sneakily allowed comments on Friday. Thanks to those of you who took the time to wish me a happy birthday. It’s one party vanity on my part and one part helping to figure out if anyone still includes this blog in their morning routine.
For the most part, it was one of the best birthdays I’ve had in a long while. A lot of that was because a childhood friend drove all the way from Mineral Wells just to take me out for a birthday lunch on Friday. He used to frustrate me so much, he lacked so much compassion in high school and college, especially for someone going into the ministry. But the man’s heart has softened over the past few years and he has been there for me in ways I never thought possible. Usually, we are surrounded by our other close friends, so it was nice to have this one-on-one time. If anything, it was fun to tell him about the previous weekend, which was one of my worst in a while. I forgot what it feels like when someone actually cares about what you tell them is going on in their life.
My birthday kind of ended on a high note. A girl I’ve been getting to know, someone I felt I had great chemistry with, decided to make a Blizzard run and meet at Dairy Queen. This is a bit funny because one of you commented on how I should get a Blizzard to cap off the birthday. The only thing was, despite meeting inside, we never ordered our Blizzards because we got lost in conversation, and the next thing we knew, it was closing time. We connected on so many big and small issues, from politics to pop culture. She asked for my number several times. I was smitten. But it was all for nothing. She ghosted me. I feel like an idiot for so many reasons. What I wish she would do is remove me as a contact on the dating app we connected on. Her keeping that connection keeps a tiny bit of hope alive, and I want to extinguish it if there’s no chance at anything.
I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned that I’ve been attending a new church. For the last several weeks, I wondered when I’d feel accepted as part of the class and not just the new dude visiting. On Sunday, we discussed various hot-topic issues that have divided many denominations. The pastor asked me to close us in prayer at the end of class. I’m sure it was overlooked by most, but to me, it was a significant moment and brought a lot of warm fuzzies inside my heart. It was a nice moment of feeling accepted and that I belonged. Truth be told, I haven’t prayed publically or in front of others in a while, so I was a little nervous. But someone was even kind enough to tell me they liked my prayer and hope I’ll pray more often. I’m just doing what I can to recognize the small wins in life because I too often overlook them.
On Labor Day, I had every intention of cleaning and doing a bunch of small chores. But then AMC started a Band of Brothers marathon. Right when I was going to get up, a dog laid down on my lap, and I was done. At least BoyGeeding helped me put together a desk that Amazon recently delivered. I made him take the lead, and only helped him when he was stuck. I could have put it all together in half an hour, but bonding with him for about two hours was well worth the extra time.
Does anyone remember watching the Rikki-Tikki-Tavi cartoon during grade school film strip time? Here’s a real-life version.
I really respect the college football teams that don’t play cupcake opponents in the first week of the season. Now that the college playoffs have expanded, you’re going to see more quality games now that schools no longer need to go undefeated and quality or strength of schedule will be a larger component.
The Longhorns now stick a football on a sword after an interception, a bit that I first noticed done by Arizona last season. But, this Longhorn running back impressed me with his work ethic.
RB Nik Sanders is out here running bleachers after the game
I didn’t verify the stat, but I read the Aggies are 1-9 (0.100) all-time when appearing on College GameDay. And this video of the College Gameday guys being brutally honest off-camera will bruise their egos. I’ve been to Kyle Field and personally never understood why they felt their game day experience was any more special than one you’d experience at The Ohio State University, Michigan, or South Bend.
After reading this article on their summer of scandals, I learned Max Lucado is serving as an interim pastor at Gateway Church in Southlake. That’s a little surprising to me. Not only does he live and continue to preach at his San Antonio, Texas church, but he is from the Church of Christ, and Gateway is nothing like the Church of Christ.
I have mixed feelings about this. Imagine if some gifted rookie quarterback wanted to wear the number 12 for the Dallas Cowboys. Staubach is such a nice guy; he’d obliged. But I wouldn’t want him put in such a situation.
I’m sorry such a thing happened to those officers. But in terms of the article, I thought it was very odd that WFAA referred to LBJ as I-635. No one calls it I-635, it’s either LBJ, HellBJ, or 635. Not to mention, it never touches Lewisville. I have a feeling someone not familiar with the area wrote this or WFAA is using some form of AI to generate the story.
In the wake of that shooting, sources tell WFAA that a chase ensued, with law enforcement eventually catching up to the suspect involved in the shooting along I-635 in Lewisville.
Traditionally, new churches are referred to as “church plants.” In this study, the Centre for Church Planting Theology discovered that even though more than 900 new churches were established by 11 dioceses in the past 10 years, none of them used the word “church plant” or “church.”
“Not one diocese used the term ‘church’ in their main descriptor. ‘Church plant’ is not used by any of the 11 dioceses. Only one diocese used ‘fresh expressions’ of ‘pioneering’ in its descriptor,” reads the study’s conclusion.
Six of the 11 dioceses preferred the language of “worship” as their main descriptor for new church projects. Seven used “community,” and only two used “congregation,” according to the Reverend Dr. Will Foulger.
