  • A lot of people know that Michael J. Fox wasn’t the initial choice to play Marty McFly. But, I didn’t know there was footage of Ben Stiller reading for the part.
  • When I first read this headline the other day, I thought it was referring to something that happened over a decade ago.
  • One overlooked fact of why U.S. soldiers did so well in WWII was that they didn’t put them in boot camps and send them right over. In this short clip, avet talks about all the different and many, many months of training he went through, even though he was eager to get over there and fight.
  • The Hardline was talking about Monday Night Football and said they don’t know anyone who watch’s the Manning Cast. I thought that was odd because the day before I was telling my friends at trivia I wish Joe and Troy didn’t do MNF because I only watch the Manning Cast. After a weekend of “traditional” announcing I enjoy watching something different and like the insights the brothers bring from playing QB.
  • I know it’s now where near the first of April, but here’s an old April Fool’s video of MLB adopting the use of aluminum bats for a season. For you Rangers fans, our old manager Buddy V makes an appearance. I always consider him “my manager” as he’s the first one I remember and grew up with.

  • The title card of last night’s Daily Show cracked me up: The First Presidential Debate, Again –  Now With 50% Old Man.
    • Jon Stewart said something I think most conservatives (and liberals) would agree with, but maybe I’m wrong. “We generate so much wealth, why do we distribute so inefficiently?“
    • Stewart had Steve Balmer on as a guest who was promoting a fact-based statistical website. Balmer really put his foot in his mouth, and Stewart playfully called him out on it when he innocently used a Twin Towers analogy literally a few minutes before the date changed to September 11th.
  • She chummed the water, and he took the bait. Many times, instead of directly answering a question, all she did was say something to bait him. And, he was hungry. Biden gave one of the worst debate performances in history. Trump: Hold my beer.
  • The worst thing he could do post-debate is to walk into the spin room. Wait a sec, he did what? Well, at least Taylor Swift hasn’t endorsed anyone yet. Whoa, wait?
  • @Kenny_Mayne – I get the folks who got conned and stay conned. I get the racists…
    I get the money only Republicans who want their tax cuts.
    I don’t get the uncommitted who are none of the above who can’t see him for what he is.
  • I made a post yesterday, but many of you may have missed it. I mistakenly scheduled it to post later in the day instead of my usual one-minute after midnight. Sorry about that.
  • Democrats, be sure to thank President Biden for doing the right thing and dropping out. But you know what, I’m still scared Trump is going to pull this one out.
  • I heard on the radio yesterday that it was Joe Perry’s birthday. Joe Perry is the well-known guitarist of Aerosmith. But I always confuse him with Journey’s original lead singer, Steve Perry. I think I do this because Steve Perry is the lead singer of Aerosmith. Thankfully, I don’t confuse these male musicians with Rick Perry.
  • I saw a cologne named Creed. That made me think of Apollo Creed, and I wondered if the fictional character had his own line of cologne, would he name it Creed or Apollo because both are great names?
  • I was researching various things about the framing of our Constitution, and one thing I’ve read numerous times stood out this particular time for some reason. It was the “Three-Fifths Compromise” at the Constitutional Convention in 1787. This agreement allowed Southern states to count three-fifths of their enslaved population for the purposes of apportioning seats in the House of Representatives and Electoral College votes, giving the South greater political power without extending rights or suffrage to the enslaved people. So, the North had a larger voting population because of its free citizens, but the South wanted to use its enslaved population to bolster its political representation, even though those people were not allowed to vote. It just bolstered my thinking of wanting to get rid of or modify the Electoral College system. I like something like Ranked Choice Voting (RTC). RCV contests feature a ballot on which each voter ranks the candidates according to their preference. Once all votes have been collected, election officials apply established tabulation rules to identify the winner or winners.

  • This is probably my favorite scene of James Earl Jones as Vader. It’s the first time in the trilogy you can hear the human being behind the monster come out and Jones nailed it
  • Y’all know I love presidential history, and I’ve stated before how it’s a goal of mine to visit all the presidential libraries. I think I even made a post about wanting to work in one and a recent job search. Anyway, I’m getting to know a girl through one of the dating apps. I didn’t put anything about my love of presidential history in my profile, but we broached the topic, and then she said this. Keep in mind that my comments are in the dark bubble. I know they aren’t, but I can’t help but think my friends are behind this, trying to prank me with a fake profile. After all, he profile was deleted the next day.
  • I respect the Michigan band; they could have totally welched on that bet.

  • Carlsbad Caverns National Park rangers call out ‘world changing’ impact of dropped Cheetos bag

    • “At the scale of human perspective, a spilled snack bag may seem trivial, but to the life of the cave it can be world changing,” the park said in its post about the garbage found off-trail in the Big Room. “The processed corn, softened by the humidity of the cave, formed the perfect environment to host microbial life and fungi. Cave crickets, mites, spiders and flies soon organize into a temporary food web, dispersing the nutrients to the surrounding cave and formations. Molds spread higher up the nearby surfaces, fruit, die and stink. And the cycle continues.”

  • Part of my morning ritual is to visit Woot.com. When they first started, they had a great gimmick of only selling one item a day, and if they sold out, too bad. They have now expanded that to one item per day per several categories and then some. Yesterday, I saw a tire lock and had two thoughts. One, they are much less expensive than I would have thought. And two, while I don’t need one, surely I can find a need to justify a purchase.
  • On October 1, 2024, Jimmy Carter will become the first US president to turn 100. Dead or alive, he’ll still be a 100.

Your Bag of Nothing for Monday, September 9, 2024

  • All forms of are back in season. So much is wrong in this world, but so much is right. It’s also that time of year that my television will ask me “Are you still watching?” because it’s been on the same channel for over four hours.
  • I’ve been happy using YouTube TV for the last three or four years. But recently, I’ve lost the remote. Remotes have changed in that it’s not easy to by a universal remote anymore, at least for a decent price. Thankfully, I can use the app on my phone for everything but turning the TV on and off.
  • Prince Hisahito becomes the first royal male in Japan to reach adulthood in 4 decades
  • In the history of the NFL, I’m not sure any player had a worse commute to their team’s opening game of the season than Tyreek Hill.
  • The atmosphere in this restaurant is incredible, I hope the food is good. I wonder if they take coupons?
  • I often said that life is stranger than fiction. In 2007, if you had told me Dick Cheney would be voting for a black female Democrat from San Francisco for the office of President of the United States, I’d say check yourself into an asylum. I thought the VP accepted the endorsement graciously and with dignity like you’d hope a mature adult would.
  • I took my first confirmation class yesterday. I hope to write about it later this week. After class I walked out and saw some of the ladies from the Sunday school I’ve been attending, which I can’t attend for a while because it’s at the same time as these confirmation classes. They were like, hey, where were you? We missed you. You always add great insight, and we look forward to hearing what you say. So, it felt good to be thought of and be missed. But confirmation class-wise, it really has me thinking and wrestling with a few things, but I think in a good way.
  • The Cowboys looked great. It would have been nice if they scored a few more touchdowns over settling for field goals. But hey, that’s a solid start to the season. I just wish Head Coach Mike McCarthy would have let our kicker try the 71-yard field goal before the end of the half. That was also Tom Brady’s debut as a broadcaster. Not great, but not bad. It’s his first game, give the man some grace. But you know who doesn’t deserve any grace for how terrible he was broadcasting his first college game? Colt McCoy. I love the guy, but the reviews are justifiably brutal. He was gawd awful. Gawd awful. He should change his name and go in the witness protection program.
  • I came very close to watching the Texas vs. Michigan game at Cosm Dallas. Just look at this video—it’s incredible. But I did some research and don’t think I’ll be going any time soon. This is what I texted my friends.

    I was really tempted to buy $22 general admission tickets for tomorrow’s Texas/Michigan game just to check it out and experience the atmosphere cheering my favorite team. But the more I read about it, the more I realized that you have to go into it knowing it’s a premium experience with a premium price, and I’m careful what I splurge on. Everyone says to avoid general admission altogether, which is standing room only on the top level, and the dome is unwatchable. Of the three levels with reserve seating, Level 2 is the best (and currently sold out). Right now, only Level 1, floor level, has available seating, but read that Level 1 will break your neck while looking at the dome. You have to buy a booth, which seats 8 and currently sells for $616 a booth. So, I bet the $700 price I saw yesterday was for a booth of 8. But that’s over $90 a person after taxes and that doesn’t include food and a tip. A lot of reviews said the audio didn’t sync well with the event and was delayed and there were a lot of issues using the app to order. The food seems above average, and the wait staff is very attentive. It seems the common man’s consensus is that it has great potential but is overpriced. But for those in which money isn’t an issue and you get the proper seating, it’s a phenomenal experience. I would probably check it out for an event I wasn’t emotionally invested. Non-dome area viewing is 11 bucks, and that’s first come first serve and just the entrance fee. 

  • Mike Leach was so good for college football. It’s a shame he died when he did and won’t make the Hall of Fame because he hasn’t hit a particular win total. But it’s nice to see that Texas Tech still loves him. They should have never gotten rid of him. He would have at least taken a Tech team to a national championship game if he was never fired.
  • Notre Dame paid Northern Illinois $1.4 million to play them in South Bend. Northern Illinois won 16-14 in Notre Dame’s hallowed stadium.
  • @alex_kirshner – BYU’s Jewish QB throwing a touchdown at SMU is a real moment for American religious pluralism. 
  • Longhorn Football:
    • I don’t follow college football closely, but this Longhorn team has my attention. I respect a program that doesn’t pack its schedule full of cupcakes. And for me, it’s more of a state pride thing.
    • Coach Sark made an interesting point. He asked the media how many visiting quarterbacks have won games on Alabama’s and Michigan’s home fields. That’s quite an accomplishment and something nice for Quinn Ewers to put on his resume. A lot of haters got bent out of shape, looking at it from a technical angle or taking it specifically, questioning how many college quarterbacks have had the chance to play on both of those fields as a visiting opponent. Stark was saying it’s an incredibly hard thing to do. But I saw some news organizations do the research, and no quarterback has ever had the chance. However, Notre Dame did win on both of those home fields in the back-to-back seasons in 79 and 80, but with different starting quarterbacks.
    • “Well, Michigan lost a lot of guys.” Well, so did Texas. Michigan had 13 draft picks, Texas had 11.
    • I thought this was a shoddy move by the father and showed that Ewers is a respectful young man. A boy walks up to Ewers after the game and asks for a photo. He obliges, and at the last second, the father tells the kid to do the horns-down hand signal. I’m not sensitive about the horns-down thing, but sneaking something in you know the person you just asked a favor of posing for a photo wouldn’t appreciate it, much less making your kid do it after asking for a moment of a player’s time as he’s walking off the field shows what kind of class the man has. I don’t even like it when people pull similar stunts with political figures.
    • The Michigan quarterback wasn’t complimentary or gracious in the shellacking, stating, “We let them win that game.”
    • I was surprised at how loud the Eyes of Texas sounded in the Big House. This is from the opposite side of the stadium.
  • I love Dallas’ own St. Vincent as a performer. She recently played in Philly and climbed the walls of the balcony during the show. Oh Annie, you have my heart.
