Your Bag of Randomness for Tuesday, September 3, 2024

  • I somewhat sneakily allowed comments on Friday. Thanks to those of you who took the time to wish me a happy birthday. It’s one party vanity on my part and one part helping to figure out if anyone still includes this blog in their morning routine.
  • For the most part, it was one of the best birthdays I’ve had in a long while. A lot of that was because a childhood friend drove all the way from Mineral Wells just to take me out for a birthday lunch on Friday. He used to frustrate me so much, he lacked so much compassion in high school and college, especially for someone going into the ministry. But the man’s heart has softened over the past few years and he has been there for me in ways I never thought possible. Usually, we are surrounded by our other close friends, so it was nice to have this one-on-one time. If anything, it was fun to tell him about the previous weekend, which was one of my worst in a while. I forgot what it feels like when someone actually cares about what you tell them is going on in their life.
  • My birthday kind of ended on a high note. A girl I’ve been getting to know, someone I felt I had great chemistry with, decided to make a Blizzard run and meet at Dairy Queen. This is a bit funny because one of you commented on how I should get a Blizzard to cap off the birthday. The only thing was, despite meeting inside, we never ordered our Blizzards because we got lost in conversation, and the next thing we knew, it was closing time. We connected on so many big and small issues, from politics to pop culture. She asked for my number several times. I was smitten. But it was all for nothing. She ghosted me. I feel like an idiot for so many reasons. What I wish she would do is remove me as a contact on the dating app we connected on. Her keeping that connection keeps a tiny bit of hope alive, and I want to extinguish it if there’s no chance at anything.
  • I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned that I’ve been attending a new church. For the last several weeks, I wondered when I’d feel accepted as part of the class and not just the new dude visiting. On Sunday, we discussed various hot-topic issues that have divided many denominations. The pastor asked me to close us in prayer at the end of class. I’m sure it was overlooked by most, but to me, it was a significant moment and brought a lot of warm fuzzies inside my heart. It was a nice moment of feeling accepted and that I belonged. Truth be told, I haven’t prayed publically or in front of others in a while, so I was a little nervous. But someone was even kind enough to tell me they liked my prayer and hope I’ll pray more often. I’m just doing what I can to recognize the small wins in life because I too often overlook them.
  • On Labor Day, I had every intention of cleaning and doing a bunch of small chores. But then AMC started a Band of Brothers marathon. Right when I was going to get up, a dog laid down on my lap, and I was done. At least BoyGeeding helped me put together a desk that Amazon recently delivered. I made him take the lead, and only helped him when he was stuck. I could have put it all together in half an hour, but bonding with him for about two hours was well worth the extra time.
  • Does anyone remember watching the Rikki-Tikki-Tavi cartoon during grade school film strip time? Here’s a real-life version.
  • I really respect the college football teams that don’t play cupcake opponents in the first week of the season. Now that the college playoffs have expanded, you’re going to see more quality games now that schools no longer need to go undefeated and quality or strength of schedule will be a larger component.
  • The USC Trojans have a pretty cool intro-hype video for their football team, but I don’t think they fully understand the story of the Trojan horse.
  • The Longhorns now stick a football on a sword after an interception, a bit that I first noticed done by Arizona last season. But, this Longhorn running back impressed me with his work ethic.

  • I didn’t verify the stat, but I read the Aggies are 1-9 (0.100) all-time when appearing on College GameDay. And this video of the College Gameday guys being brutally honest off-camera will bruise their egos. I’ve been to Kyle Field and personally never understood why they felt their game day experience was any more special than one you’d experience at The Ohio State University, Michigan, or South Bend.

  • Just a lineman living the dream.
