The Google Christmas Cards Finally Arrived

Yesterday I received 20 Christmas cards from BoN readers.  Nineteen of them were from Google link I provided, and one was from Gracie of Corinth, TX.  Gracie was not only nice enough to include a coupon to Mimi’s Cafe, but she sent a most creative Christmas card which you’ll be able to see for yourself.

A lot of the Google Christmas (and a few Hanukkah) cards were quite creative, and one even came from a South African reader.  Because of the creativity and since they all arrived at the same time, I decided I would share all the messages with you.  I only edited the last name on the cards to protect any private information.  Oh, and FetusGeeding even got his first ever mail and he’s not even born yet!  (And yes, Jonathan, I can definitely tell which one you sent.)

Thanks for taking the time to wish us some Christmas cheer.

  • I forgot John Candy was in Home Alone.
  • Joe Pesci is also in that movie, which made me wonder when he was last in a movie . . . 2006.
  • One down side about this time of year is that the radio personalities I like to listen to on Sports Radio 1310 The Ticket are usually on vacation, right when all the important Cowboys games are being played.  But because they are off on a well deserved vacation, they get the lesson known hosts more air time.  One of the hosts always invites his father and some other older men, probably in their 70’s and 80’s to sit around and talk sports and what it was like back in the day.  I think the segment is called “The Oldtimers Roundtable” and it’s always a joy to listen to.  Maybe it’s because I no longer have the opportunity to hear things from my dad regarding to “how things were,” or maybe I just really enjoy the whole concept of reminiscing, but either way, if you have some free time Thursday 10:00 am – 1:00 pm it might be worth listening.  You can just hear how much the host enjoys having his father on the show, and you can almost hear it in his voice that he knows this opportunity isn’t going to present itself for much longer and they are treasuring what they can.
  • A reader was nice enough to put together this holiday message from Barack Obama to me.

  • Boston.com always does a great job with their The Big Picture section, and this one about the decade doesn’t disappoint.

Kim Peek, the original Rain Man, dies

Kim Peek, the autistic savant who inspired the Oscar-winning film Rain Man, has died, aged 58.

Mr Peek’s father Fran said that his son had suffered a major heart attack on Saturday and was pronounced dead at a hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah, the town where he had spent his life.

Mr Peek was probably the world’s most famous savant. Described as a confounding mixture of disability and genius, his astonishing ability to retain knowledge inspired the writer Barry Morrow to write Rain Man, the 1988 movie starring Dustin Hoffman that won four Academy Awards.

Born in 1951 in Salt Lake city, Mr Peek was diagnosed as severely mentally retarded and his parents were advised to place him in an institution and forget about him. Thirty years later, he was classified as a “mega-savant,” a genius in about 15 different subjects, from history and literature and geography to numbers, sports, music and dates.

By the time of his death he had committed more than 9,000 books to memory and Nasa made him the subject of MRI-based research, hoping that technology used to study the effects of space travel on the brain would help explain his mental capabilities.
