Mexican Immigrant Tells Radio Station His Son Helped Kill Bin Laden

A story circulating in the Mexican press says one of the Navy SEALs who went on the mission to assassinate Osama bin Laden earlier this week is the American-born son of Mexican immigrants. According to Mexican news service Notimex, Martín Mejía, the father of Navy SEAL Ruben Mejia spoke with Los Angeles radio station 97.9 La Raza recently claiming that they were notified of their son’s involvement in the mission when a dozen soldiers arrived at their home carrying a folded flag. The senior Mejia said that upon seeing the flag, he and his wife began crying, thinking the worst, but were quickly notified that the soldiers were there to bring good news–their son had “fulfilled a great mission for our nation.”

Mejía went on to say that he has since spoken to his son who allegedly told him he was promoted to sergeant for completing the operation in which his team engaged and killed bin Laden. Mejia also noted that his son said his team disabled a helicopter, suffered a few bruises, and received praise from President Barack Obama who wanted to meet with the team as soon as possible. Mejía’s son also said he saw Bin Laden’s body when it was carried out of the highly guarded mansion now under control of the military.

Minister moms split between pulpit, potty training

WASHINGTON (RNS) Every now and then, the Rev. Amy Butler will find herself having to do a little simultaneous parenting and preaching from her pulpit at Calvary Baptist Church in downtown Washington.

“My daughter, in particular, knows the look,” said Butler, whose teenage children sit — and occasionally chat — with their friends in the balcony. “And if I’m up front leading worship, I can see everything … so if I need to shoot a look, I do.

“And they know exactly what that means.”

Female pastors with one flock at home and another in the pews say being a minister and a mom is a perpetual juggling act, with high expectations, never enough time and challenges that their male colleagues will never face.

At the same time, they say, it can also be a profound blessing.

“Baptist women ministers more than ever before are young, married, and starting families,” said Pam Durso, executive director of the group Baptist Women in Ministry.

Pregnancy, in particular, creates unusual dynamics for clergy and congregations. The Rev. Rachel Cornwell doesn’t usually talk about herself in her sermons, but one Sunday during Advent, two days before her son was born, she couldn’t help but draw parallels to the baby Jesus.

Bag of Randomness

  • I’m thinking if I looked anything like Osama bin Laden, I’d at least shave the beard.  But this guy is embracing the resemblance, going as far as wearing camouflage and posing with fake weapons.
  • A Colorado man wants 25% of the bin Laden bounty.  He claims he flushed the terrorist out of the mountains.
  • I don’t see W declining Obama’s invitation to attend a 9/11 ceremony together offensive or rude or classless in any way.  The man dedicated eight hard years to this country, if he wants to stay at home, let him stay at home.  Speaking of W, Will Ferrell has a new skit impersonating him, but I didn’t think it was that funny.
  • I really have no opinion about releasing the photo(s) of a dead bin Laden.  But here are pictures of the other dead men at the compound via Reuters.  Gruesome Warning.
  • The commander of the bin Laden mission was a Longhorn (fourth paragraph).
  • It sounds like Christiane Amanpour has some very good sources.
  • Gov Good Hair and other Texas Republicans like Senator John Cornyn, the same folks who are always complaining that the federal government is spending too much and how federal budgets need to be slashed and how Texas can take care of itself, are upset that Obama hasn’t granted a federal declaration for emergency regarding the Texas wildfires, which would clear the path for federal aid.  Heck, Gov Good Hair is even upset that Alabama, which I believe had over 250 deaths (and much more residential damage) due to the tornadoes, has received aid over the two deaths in Texas that resulted in a bunch of lake houses being destroyed.  Heck, I saw a resident on CBS 11 being interviewed saying that most of those houses that were destroyed were just vacation homes, and probably only 5% use those houses as a permanent residence.  Of course in all of their grandstanding they fail to recognize that Texas has already been allocated 16 fire management assistance grants that provide financial support for the specific purpose of fighting fires, and will receive six more additional grants.
  • I often am annoyed that the Texas Rangers share the same name as the New York Rangers.  Sometimes I’ll see an article that states ‘Rangers’ thinking it about my local sports team, only to find it was about that hockey team in the northeast.  I bet Giants fans of San Fransisco and New York feel the same way.
  • Have you ever wanted to watch a movie that was considered to have such bad acting that you would be entertained?  After finding out this Jessica Simpson movie was released in Russia and Bulgaria and then straight to DVD in the U.S., this is definitely a must see.

Houston Teacher Suspended After Telling Muslim Student ‘I Bet You’re Grieving’

HOUSTON (KTRK) — The death of Osama bin Laden is related to an investigation of a teacher at Clear Brook High School. The teacher is accused of making a racially insensitive comment to a student in front of the entire class.

A Friendswood mom says she was offended by what her daughter says happened Monday in ninth grade algebra.

She said, “The teacher told the student that ‘I bet you’re grieving.’ And she basically looked at him and said what are you talking about? And he said I heard about your uncle’s death and she said wow, because she understood that he was referring about Osama bin Laden being killed and was racially profiling her.”

The remark was made to a classmate, an American-born girl of Muslim faith. It happened at Clear Brook High School in the Clear Creek Independent School District. The mom wanted to speak out about the incident but wanted us to protect her identity, saying she doesn’t want any retaliation against her daughter or the girl who experienced the inappropriate comment.

The mother said, “The student ended up crying over what was said to her by the teacher and the teacher asked her why she was crying and another student said it was because of what you said earlier. And his response was, oh, OK, and just kind of smirked and giggled and walked away.”
