  • My pastor is having all of us deacons and elders read Deep and Wide, a book about creating a church for the unchurched.  I never liked being assigned reading assignments when in school, and I’m not a fan of it now, but I’ll do what I’m asked and will try to give it chance.
  • I would try to look for the movie version of the book but I have a feeling with a title like that, I might find something that focuses on the missionary position but nothing about church ministry.
  • The introduction of the book stated something that kinda stood out.  The author states it wasn’t the content of Jesus’ messages that appealed to the masses, a lot of time people didn’t really know what he was saying, but people flocked to him because he fed them, healed them, comforted them, and promised them things.
  • When I come across the word ‘unchurched’ I think of ‘the undead’ which makes me think of zombies.  I’m not saying there’s a churchy metaphor there, I just think about zombies a lot.
  • Emily Kinney, Beth from ‘The Walking Dead’ (Hershel’s youngest daughter), is a surprisingly 27-years-old.
  • Robert Ebert has died.  He lived the last part of his life without a jaw.  I recall seeing a profile of his life not too long ago that showed how he ate, a protein shake dripped into a tube in his stomach.  His wife always ate away from him in another room out of respect, but sometimes he would ask her to eat a particular food and enjoy it for him.
  • I remember when his film critic partner Gene Siskel died.  He wasn’t included in the Oscars ‘In Memoriam’  as he wasn’t a member of the Academy, but thought it was poignant that host Whoopi Goldberg noted his passing after that segment.
  • For the most part I like my job and it doesn’t get real stressful, but one thing I don’t like is that it can become political and sometimes I have to take bullets for my team, which makes me look like I’m at fault or not knowledgeable.
  • One of my favorite college professors was only at my school for a year and he served as my academic adviser.  I actually got a C in his class.  He was Harvard educated and a former university president and provost that just needed to hang his hat somewhere for a year.  During one summer session I dropped out of school due to my father’s health.  About a week late he sent me a hand written letter saying he was surprised about my dropping out of class and just wanted to make sure everything was OK, and if not, that he was there to help.  I’ll always remember that and I still keep in touch with him today.  He just bout a 41 Lincoln Continental and is doing consultant management for the Citadel.
  • I had a moment of weakness last night, and for the first time since maybe November I got fast food after eating dinner and before going to bed.  Usually I can find something reasonable healthy at home but for some reason I was really craving Whataburger which I don’t think I’ve had this year.  I fear this one moment of weakness will turn in what was a bad habit for me.
  • I have hit a bit of a plateau.  At my worst I was over 260 lbs, I just stopped weighing after hitting 258 because I just didn’t want to see any number on the scale higher than 260.  Now I’ve been maintaining around 217.
  • Thanks to a friend I’ll be going to the Rangers game on Sunday, which means WifeGeeding will have to hold off on the season premier of ‘Mad Men’ until I get home.  Thank goodness for the DVR.
  • Valley View Mall is about to become Midtown Dallas, and I think the 20-acre park and overhead cable cars that connect it to the Galleria will to be pretty cool.  I think it will be finished sometime after all that 635 construction.
  • There was a lot of mention of Letterman and Leno’s first joke after the Tonight Show announcement, but most people fail to realize Letterman made the same exact joke when Conan got the gig.
  • ‘Arrested Development’ returns on Netflix May 26
  • Every interaction Sheldon had with Mrs Davis last night on ‘The Big Bang Theory’ was just hilarious.
  • Speaking of Netflix, the latest series I’ve been watching is Monk.
  • The Bible has two variations of the death of Judas.

Quotations of actual uses of the word are also provided, and whenever possible, the Dictionary explains the origin of a term and who originally coined it.

  • We’ve got a pretty sick GirlGeeding in the house which resulted in a trip to the doctor.  At one point she was going to get some IV’s but thankfully some of the anti-nausea meds started to kick in as well as a fever reducer.  As a parent, your heart really goes out to child when they are hurting, it’s a interesting feeling of pain/hope/helplessness I haven’t experienced before.
  • Our pediatrician was nice enough to call a little before 10:00 PM just to check up on GirlGeeding.
  • I’ve never tried inline skate but I have good memories of the four-wheeled skate at the roller rink.  I liked that feeling of taking the skates off and still feeling like you were moving.  The last time I tried to skate was back in college, and it’s not like riding a bike, and I think that was the first time I realized that falling down as an adult hurts more than when I was a child.
  • I should sports headlines about the Rangers would start off with TX Rangers or NY Rangers.
  • Someone on the radio was talking about using the vertical hold on an old television.  Man, that brought back some memories.
  • The first line in this article stood out: A beard-wearing woman was attacked as she crucified Jesus.
  • A lot of people say “If you don’t mind my asking …” but I’ve always said “If you don’t mind me asking …”
  • I think those Madame Tussauds and Ripley was figures don’t resemble their subjects very well and don’t look very lifelike.
  • SI.com has the Shaq jersey retirement ceremony video on their website.  That’s the first time I can remember seeing such a thing in its entirety on a website.  There have been many Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor ceremonies and other local team jersey retirements I would have loved to watch in their entirety but they have never been broadcast or uploaded.  I hope to see SI continue this trend.
  • While watching ‘The Americans’ I noticed I had the same Star Wars bed sheets as the boy in the show.  Our family also had the same Buick, except it was white with green forest interior.  My folks always gave me a hard time about that car.  They got it shortly after my birth and said I peed in the back right when they got it.
  • I was a bit surprised at the death in last night’s show.  If I remember correctly, that character, early in the series, questioned if there were KGB agents blended into American society.
  • I had another friend ask me my thoughts on where Judas Iscariot is spending eternity.  He said most would justifiably think the betrayer of Jesus would be in Hell.  However, he reasoned that Jesus needed and wanted him to do the betrayal, that Judas was created or chosen to help fulfill prophesy, or put another way, to help God’s plan be fulfilled   He went on to say it was hard for him to reason God choosing someone to help him fulfill prophesy only to condemn him to Hell.
  • When it comes to theological or biblical ‘arguments’ I use to feel I had to pick a side and justify my answer, now I’m just happy seeing both sides of an issue, and for the most part, not choosing.

  • Any doubt that Yu Darvish gets the opening day start next year?
  • I tried to be a good friend and text my closest friends who love the Rangers just to make sure their eyes were on the game for the ninth inning.
  • I can’t imagine the pressure a fielder must have when a ball comes their way in the ninth inning of a perfect game, not that the last hit was anyone’s fault.
  • I think Yu was teary-eyed coming off the field after his teammates and Wash talked to him.
  • One of my close friends was in a Houston airport bar lounge watching the game in the ninth when his flight started to board.  He felt like his leaving the bar to board his flight jinxed Yu.
  • Those Rangers know how to break hearts with one out to go in the ninth.  Just look at last night and that game six in St Louis a few seasons ago.
  • I think I prefer last night’s sideline reporter better than Emily Jones.
  • Yu has a bit of a Nolan Ryan appeal to him, that whenever he takes the mound you feel like you need to watch because something special could happen.
  • Twitter makes events like last night pretty cool, it’s like being in one large living room with your friends, family, and enemies.
  • Study: Texans spend $4.37 billion gambling each year in Oklahoma, New Mexico and Louisiana
  • It sure didn’t take FGCU’s head basketball coach to jump ship.  With that in mind, I really admire the Butler coach for staying put and trying to build something.
  • Until yesterday, I never saw this great photo of Laker greats Shaquille O’Neal, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and George Mikan.

  • “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift and that’s why they call it the present.”
