Bag of Randomness for Thursday, May 2, 2024

  • I attended one of DaughterGeeding’s softball games this week. It was a beautiful late afternoon at the softball fields with a playground in the middle. One parent brought a younger sibling. He probably never saw the playground because he sat in his foldup chair watching an iPad the entire game. To each their own, it wasn’t affecting anyone, but I had a problem with the kid playing his iPad at full volume. That’s one of my pet peeves: tiny speakers at a volume in which the sound sounds distorted. Not to mention, it’s noise pollution and a distraction from the game. I kindly asked the parent if the volume could be turned down, and she kindly agreed, but it was such a minuscule amount that it was hard to tell the difference. So, now I have a dilemma: do I ask her again? That can come across as rude and controlling, even if I think the loud volume to begin with. It was a bit of a Curb Your Enthusiasm moment. I let it be nothing but an opportunity to block it out, accept the things that are beyond my control, and focus on the event I came to watch.
  • With one out and a runner on first, the ball got hit to DaughterGeeding, who was playing second base, and she pulled a Bill Buckner. You can tell it bothered her. On the next play, the ball gets hit to her, and she tags the runner and throws to first to make the double play and retire the inning. It’s great watching your kid rebound from adversity in front of your eyes.

  • This is from a few days ago when I was trying to find stuff to post about the next day but got carried away by the day. Wow, what a crazy coincidence:
    • The emergency slide that fell off a Delta flight departing from JFK Airport on Friday was found two days later — washed up in front of the beachside house of a lawyer whose firm happens to be suing Boeing over safety issues, The Post has learned.
  • I’ve always liked Billy Joel’s Uptown Girl. I thought it was written specifically for Christi Brinkley, but Elle MacPherson says she was dating Joel when he wrote the song. But Joel has confirmed he changed the title from plural to the singular when he fell for Brinkley.

  • This is from November and actually has two skits on the page, but still relevant. I’m not trying to comment on the situation, but will say they need a studio audience or a laugh track – The Israeli version of Saturday Night Live, sketch show “Eretz Nehederet” (Wonderful Country), mocks Western student protesters siding with Hamas in this skit
  • Jerry Seinfeld was on Kimmel the other night and specifically referenced this moment with David Letterman. It actually starts at the 2:48 mark but the whole skit is worth watching.
