Man’s Kidneys Fail After Drinking Too Much Tea: Case Study

(Reuters Health) – – The puzzling case of a 56-year-old U.S. man who suddenly developed weakness, fatigue and body aches is leading doctors to warn that massive consumption of tea may be responsible for some unexplained cases of kidney failure.

It’s being called iced-tea nephropathy by the New England Journal of Medicine, which published a letter describing the case.

    Yeah, I saw that earlier and it piqued my interest. I drink a couple gallons over about three days. But, I make mine with about 50% black tea base, 25% green tea, and the rest herbals (peach/chamomile/ginseng and whatnot). Since last September, I've pretty much weaned myself off the sugar – I now sweeten it with Splenda and Stevia.

    There was an ER episode where a guy comes into the er and his guts are hurting. It turns out he drank a lot of tea, and ate a lot of ice cream, and the nurse was like, you're a chemistry teacher, you should know this will give you kidney stones. Which kind of unsettled me because I do that too.
