  • I chopped down a tree with a ax yesterday, I think that’s a first for me.  Granted, the trunk wasn’t that big so it wasn’t much of an accomplishment, but it made me feel manly.
  • One of my neighbors is getting a pool, and I was lucky enough to get an insane amount of free dirt to level out my backyard.  Now it’s time to work on a retaining wall and modify the fence.
  • I’m not sure if I’m sick from allergies, sinus problems, or some bug, I’m going to the doctor today.
  • Here are some interesting rules new University of Texas football coach Charlie Strong is implementing, the full list is here.
    • Players will attend all of their classes and sit in the front two rows of all of their classes.
    • If a player misses a class, he runs until it hurts.  If he misses two classes, his entire position unit runs.  If he misses three, the position coach runs.  The position coaches don’t want to run.
    • Players may not live off campus anymore, unless they’re a senior who hits certain academic standards. The University will buy out the leases for every player currently living off campus and put them in the athletic dorm.
  • I finished the current season of ‘Sherock’ and I’m already going through withdrawals, but I most certainly applaud the season finale. #bravo
  • PBS aired some sort of behind the scenes special on Sherlock and it was great.  I really liked how it shows the series is closely tied to all the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle novel.  Funny thing, but when I first started with the series my first thought about the Benedict Cumberbatch was that they most of chosen him for his acting chops because he isn’t attractive in the least.  But when watching that behind the scenes special they talked about his sex symbol status.  You can watch that special on PBS’s website here and it does’t contain any spoilers for the upcoming series the American audience hasn’t seen.
  • That special stated that Sherlock Holmes is the most portrayed literary human character played on film and television, Guinness World Records backs up that claim.  He’s been depicted on screen 254 times by 75 actors.  But the most portrayed literary character of all times belongs to . . . Dracula.  I’m assuming both records do not include porn parodies.
  • I’m trying to figure out if I’m just caught up in the moment or if ‘Sherlock’ is the best television series I’ve ever watched, even better than ‘Breaking Bad’.  I think one thing that has helped me was the ability to binge watch the series.

Last Sunday I started the HBO series "True Detective". I've read three reviews on it and they all went out on a limb and opined it would be one of the best, if not the best, series for 2014, even though we are only in January. I have to agree. It really grabbed me. I've never been a big fan of Woody Harrelson or Matthew McConaughey, but they really nailed their roles as the two detectives working the case.

What I also like is that the plan is to have this season resolved (the investigation of an occult murder) by the end of episode eight. Next year a new crime with a different cast of big name stars.
