Bag of Randomness

  • The one thing that college football coverage does that the NFL is lacking is the showcasing of the dejected fan of the losing team which makes for great comedy.
  • The College Football Playoff will help settle some of the silliness of college football.  Before the start of the season, Auburn wasn’t even in the top 25, in week 8 they snuck in at 24 on the AP poll, and appeared in the top ten BCS ranking only in week 11.  And now, finally, they are ranked first.  EDIT: I actually wrote all of that at halftime, which reminded me of the time I started to write a post about the Rangers World Series Championship when there was one out to go, which makes me think I jinxed them so you have me to blame the loss.  But in case you were wondering, Florida State started the season ranked 11, and I like what ESPN did with the graphic of Winston and the Heisman Trophy.
  • This will be the last year the crystal football will be awarded to the BCS champion, I never really cared for the crystal football, but they are keeping the new trophy under wraps to create some suspense.
  • On ESPN2 they had Tim Tebow and Johnny Manziel offering commentary.  It made me think of the old devil on one shoulder and angel on the other routine.  Truthfully, Manziel did an okay job for being a bit of out his element.  I also enjoyed Saban’s halftime and postgame commentary.
  • I finally watched the ESPN special ‘The Book of Manning’ and left admiring Archie and his family much more than before.  But I was disappointed they never addressed Archie stepping in and making sure Eli wouldn’t become a Charger, that always rubbed me the wrong way, and was one reason I could never find it in myself to root for Elway.
  • I have an old University of Texas national championship t-shirt I wear when doing chores around the house.  It’s just one of those old shirts that you don’t mind getting dirty.  In the middle of doing chores and wearing said shirt I was asked to run to the store where a man in a Sooner hat came up to me, chuckled, and said, “I wonder how old that shirt is?”  I looked at my shirt, pointed to the part where “2005” was printed, and then was called a f—ing smartass.
  • I can’t tell you the number of time I feared the answer to a question more than asking it.
  • I was reading the latest issue of Consumer Reports and found out a product I own, a Ryobi battery charger, is in recall.
  • KERA – In Tarrant County, some employers are choosing to hire workers who’ve just gotten out of prison.  They’re taking part in a program that gives ex-offenders a second chance at life, while businesses get eager employees.
  • Jerry Seinfeld did a Reddit Ask Me anything yesterday and his answer about writers block surprised me, “Writer’s block is a phony, made up, BS excuse for not doing your work.”
  • Someone asked Erin Andrews on Twitter what socks she wore to keep her feet warm as she did sideline reporting at super frigid Green Bay on Sunday, and she replied it was the Gerbing’s heated sock.  I thought I could use a good pair of warm socks, but had no idea those socks cost about $200.  It turns out each sock is lined with a type of nanowire that works with a microporcessor managed 7v lithium ion battery which will keep your feet warm to anywhere from 135°F for two hours or 85°F for 10 hours.  Here’s an interesting video review about the product.  I had no idea such socks existed, I guess that’s what happens when you live in a warm climate area.
