A Sermon Series I’ve Been Interested In : Jesus: Myth, Madman or Messiah

Is there any evidence that Jesus existed? Aren’t his miracles the fabrications of the early church? Did he die a disillusioned zealot? How does his death “save” anyone?

No one has had a greater impact upon history, yet Jesus remains an enigma. Conservatives and liberals each make Jesus into their image. Meanwhile skeptics question whether he ever lived. Christianity affirms that he was the divine Son of God. Others believe he was merely a man. And, many have questions.

If you’ve ever had questions or doubts about Jesus of Nazareth, join us beginning January 4th/5th. For five weeks we’ll consider the claims of early Christians, listen to the questions raised by earnest skeptics, and seek to understand who the Jesus of history really was.

Details for this coming Sunday:

This weekend as we continue in our series of sermons about the questions that are asked about Jesus we’ll look at “The Humanity of Jesus.” We’ll consider the meaning of the Virgin Birth and the answer to a question I have been asked on several occasions, “Do I have to believe in the Virgin Birth to be a Christian?” We’ll also look at questions about Jesus’ childhood. Was Jesus married – an idea that some third century Gnostic Christians seem to have believed? What did Jesus look like? Recently a Fox news reporter created a stir when she said that Jesus (and Santa) was white. Was he? I’ll end the sermon with a word about one of the defining characteristics of Jesus’ humanity, one I find most compelling. Each of these questions we’ll consider this weekend will help us as we answer the question Jesus asked his disciples long ago, “Who do you say that I am?”
