I thought the U.S. was the first nation to send a probe to another planet (Mars) and transmit data and a picture back to Earth, but the Russians actually were the first with the Venera spacecrafts: . . . probes of the series became the first man-made devices to enter the atmosphere of another planet (Venera 4′ on October 18, 1967), to make a soft landing on another planet (Venera 7 on December 15, 1970), to return images from the planetary surface (Venera 9 on June 8, 1975), and to perform high-resolution radar mapping studies of Venus (Venera 15 on June 2, 1983). I found this part of Venera 4 interesting, “The probe parachuted down, collecting and transmitting data for 93 minutes until, at an altitude of about 25 km, the planet’s enormous atmospheric pressure crushed it.” You can find the first pictures taken of another planet’s surface here if you are interested.
The Russians also landed a moon rover in 1970. Our Mars rover resembles the Soviet moon rover, with the wheels and all. Heck, those Russians had a lot of firsts when it comes to space.
