Ghost Ship – Amsterdam Light Festival

Screenshot 2014-12-23 at 7.47.38 PM

An image of a ship is projected on two intersecting bodies of water which makes a ghost ship.

The Flying Dutchman is back! Anchored in front of ARCAM Amsterdam Center for Architecture and The National Maritime Museum, the 17th century ghost ship rests motionless on the surface of the water. When the wind picks up, the ship comes to life; its sails fill and the vessel sways back and forth. Across the water is the colorful replica of the famous Dutch East India Company ship that started its maiden voyage to Batavia in 1749, but that was wrecked in a storm on the English Channel and fell prey to looters.

  • I was going to go with this picture at the top of this post but thought some of you might find it too provocative.
  • I watched Anchorman 2 last night and it was better and funnier than I expected.  It’s set in the 70’s and there are several skyline views of NYC, but I’m surprised the World Trade Center twin towers weren’t in them.  Steve Carell is such a scene stealer in that movie.
  • The CBS Evening New was broadcasting live from a Las Colinas gas station touting $1.99 gas, but just seven miles away in my dwelling area gas is $1.89.

  • The GOP’s hatred towards Socialist Obama isn’t justified with the latest economic news, but I guess it’s just the liberal media propping him up:
    • The Dow has never been higher and has more than doubled since he took office.
    • GDP has its fastest rate of expansion since 2003.
    • The economy grew 4.6 percent in the second quarter, making it the first time in 11 years that GDP has risen at least 4 percent for two straight quarters.
    • Personal income and personal disposable income has grown, though not at a great rate.
    • Gas prices are down.
  • Are there justifiable reasons to be upset with the current administration? Absolutely, and they don’t deserve full credit everything.  But when it comes to the latest figures, the economy shouldn’t be one.  Now it’s just a matter of time before I get some spiteful comments about my ignorance and blind allegiance and how things would be better faster if other policies were put into place, but maybe the Christmas spirit will prevent that from happening.

  • I wasn’t a follower of his music, but it wasn’t until yesterday that I learned Joe Crocker was British.  I’m just going to chalk that one up to singers singing without an accent.
  • Somewhat related, I had no idea who Joe Jamail was until reading Barry’s blog and his hatred towards him over the years.  I’d see the name while watching Longhorn games, but just thought it was some rich Middle Eastern oil guy that attended UT and used the American name Joe.  Man, I was way off.
  • I saw a commercial in which the Leaning Tower of Pisa was the focus.  That reminded me of one of the Christopher Reeves Superman movies where he turned bad and made the tower perpendicular with the ground, ticking off the souvenir salesman in the foreground who was selling models of the tower with a lean.  Later in the movie, Superman turned good again and came back to the tower to put the lean back into the tower, once again upsetting the souvenir salesman who was now selling non-leaning models of the tower [YouTube].
