1939 NFL Brooklyn Dodgers vs Detroit Lions – High Quality Color Video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MyD3XKhgHd8&feature=youtu.be
YouTube user classicsportsvids one-upped the NFL in a huge way. The user uploaded on Saturday over 10 minutes of mind-blowingly clear footage of the 1939 game between the Detroit Lions and Brooklyn Dodgers.
It’s hard to believe that this footage is not only real but captured as clearly as it was. However, everything checks out. This footage only contains highlights from the half, which ends in a 0-0 tie in the video. According to Pro Football Reference, this game did indeed go to halftime tied 0-0, but ended with the Lions winning 27-7. Additionally, the Lions’ quarterback at the time, Johnny Pingel (who also served as the team’s punter and running back), wore the number 37, as it clearly shows in the video above.
There are so many neat things in this video and as The TICKET described yesterday, the quality of this video is amazing as you consider how old it is, especially since it’s in color. No one is wearing a facemask, you see all the classic cars in the parking lot, the refs are dressed in all white and wearing bow ties, and I could go on and on.
The Lions are in blue and the Dodgers are in red.
My father played semi-pro during this period. I may have some old pictures with his team wearing those old leather helmets or newspaper clippings.
UPDATE: There’s no date on this article, but it appears Dad recovered a fumble and here’s the team picture.
Dad is pretty much in the center, back row, to the left of the dude in the white shirt. Click to enlarge:

- We knew it was going to happen eventually, but we have a sporting schedule conflict which will cause the family to split. BoyGeeding has his first tee-ball game of the season the same time DaughterGeeding has her first soccer game of the season.
- Energy drinks have never appealed to me. And just as I saw coffee as the first sign of aging (times have changed, though), I felt like consuming an energy drink was a sign of weakness, at least for myself.

- In Dallas, police were worried about unidentifiable dead bodies that turned up by the side of the highway. (The FBI has warned about serial killers working as truck drivers.) Voluntarily give a DNA sample now, the program promised, and if it’s your dead body, at least your family will know.

- This restroom sink at the Musical Hall at Fair Park fascinated me. On the left is an automated soap dispenser, then the faucet, and on the right is a hand dryer similar to the Dyson Airblade. The entire restroom was filled with these things.
- BoyGeeding doesn’t need eyeblack for tee-ball but I couldn’t resist the purchase. And I never liked the sticker variety, the regular marker stuff seems more legit.
- If the kids ever need a splinter removed it defaults to me since their mother has no depth perception due to her one eye. It also means I thread all needles.
- I caught an odd moment during WFAA’s late night broadcast. Right before going to commercial break, Cynthia Izaguirre teased a story with, “A car accident turned her world upside down …” and then it showed the subject of the story literally saying, “It turned my world upside down.” It somewhat reminded me of the SNL skit of “New for the Hard of Hearing”.

- ‘Cash Cab’ Revived at Discovery Channel – Discovery Channel is rebooting the game show, which previously ran for 10 seasons, from 2005-12, and won three Emmy Awards. The new episodes will feature a twist: Stars from the worlds of comedy, film and TV will get behind the wheel of the cab itself as they pick up unsuspecting passengers.
