A Tour of My Tho

One of the things we did today was take a tour of My Tho.  It started with a trip on a very rough looking river boat across a river to some islands.  When on the island, we drank some honey tea made with honey they harvest themselves and ate some local fresh fruit.  After that we visited some areas that most people would associate with Vietnam.  The tour ended with us on some type of small river boat.  The cool part was we actually had to paddle ourselves through a very jungle type looking area for about 20 minutes back into the river to our large boat.

Check out the pictures here or a slideshow of them here, and I’ll try to add some video footage to YouTube when I get some high-speed Internet access.

I’m so thankful that God decided to create Ambien. 😉 It really helps with the time change. First thing in the morning my family took us to eat breakfast. It was a combination of eggs, steak, a Vienna sausage, lots of grease, some kind of sauce, and French bread. It was actually very tasty, but I could tell WifeGeeding didn’t like it that much.

After we ate, we visited the marketplace. There is just wayyyyy to much to describe here, so I’ll just trust in the adage that a picture is worth a thousand words and provide you with a flickr link to view at your pleasure here, or can check out a slide show of the pics here. Yup, I’m not in Texas anymore.

After the market we spent a lot of time at my family’s house. It’s a very small two story building. As you enter the house we immediately see a shrine dedicated to loved ones. You can see pictures of both of my parents there, and they placed my mother’s ashes just below her picture. One of the kids placed a small Christmas tree there because she thought Mom would have liked that. It was also interesting to see all the pictures hanging on their walls. All of the pictures were of my family, with the exception of only a few which was of their immediate family. There are even pictures of my in-laws and one photo of me and my prom date (I thought I destroyed all those!). I’m really just beginning to grasp how much my mother and all of us means to them.

Even though their house is much better than years ago, it’s still pretty humbling by American standards. No AC and no shower. They basically just use wash cloths everyday. The stairs used to get to the top floor are more like steps to a ladder, but the furniture they made to furnish the place is pretty inventive and impressive. The roof is covered with plants that they really like, and all the buildings are just far enough part to walk through.  They tried to make us feel at home by playing some American music, unfortunately it was country music. I loath that music, but it sure made WifeGeeding happy.

After we ate lunch at their place we just really sat around and talked. One part of lunch I wanted to make note of is how they always set aside a small dish for those that are no longer with us. My uncle is better at English than I thought, but my sister does most of the translating. One thing that really stuck out was his daughter. She made this very beautiful dress for her Barbie. It’s not an Asian Barbie or anything, but some kind of knock-off. After we complimented her work, we asked how many Barbies did she own. She gave us a bit of a puzzling look and responded “That’s it, I only need one. I don’t think you would ever hear an eight year old American girl say that.

Later in the day we visited some relatives. I had no idea who they were, but it was fun visiting with them. Heck, one of the even called a relative in Germany and I had to speak to her. Even though she couldn’t speak English, it was still a pleasant conversation.

After that family visit we went back to the hotel and I took one of the best naps of my life. After nap time came dinner and doing some touristy things. Now it’s about time to hit the sack again.

A few notes about the hotel. There are only two English speaking channels, the BBC and CNN. Right now the Daily Show with Jon Stewart is on CNN, which is normally shown on Comedy Central. Weird, huh?? It begins with a disclaimer that it’s a fictional news show with actors as reporters. Sometimes I think that disclaimer should be show at the beginning of every Fox News broadcast. Oh, and to turn the electricity on in our room you have to insert the hotel key in a special slot.

Good Evening Vietnam!!!!!!!

Saigon

We land safely and are one of the first off the plane. We head to customs, and then learned just how thankful we were to get off the plane so quickly because the line just got very very long behind us. After customs we head down to pick up our baggage, and l learn that the mens restroom at the airport doesn’t have doors. I guess that’s what you call an open door policy. Thank you, thank, you, I’ll be here all week, literally.

After luggage pickup we head to the second area of customs were you are asked if you have anything to declare and all that kind of stuff. That’s where we had a little trouble getting Mom through, but then after that comes a moment I will never forget. Right after that second customs area is the exit of the airport where a huge crowd of people awaits, and I mean a HUGE crowd with music blaring and people yelling.  I thought to myself, “This is what is must feel like to be Bono.”

But as we exit the airport, right there in the front of the crowd, I spot my uncle and he’s waving as noticeably as he can with a huge smile on his face. Next to him is his wife (Mom’s sister) and she’s crying along with several other family members. As we approach them the rush towards us. I’m in the back pushing the luggage cart, but I can see my Aunt immediate go hug my sister, her daughter. If you recall, my sister is really their daughter, but my folks adopted her back in 1994. Wow, the emotion of seeing a child reunited with parents who haven’t seen each other in over ten years. My sister was carrying Mom, and immediately I see my aunt grab a hold of Mom’s remains and just start breaking down. I also recall seeing my entire Vietnamese family embracing WifeGeeding and crying uncontrollably, accepting her as one of their own. WifeGeeding also starts to break down. Man, I should have video recorded this event rather than snap a few pics.

Then it was my turn, the family turned to me and it was the first time in all my life I felt totally accepted for just being myself. Family I have only seen in pictures are hugging and crying on me. I really don’t have the words to respectfully describe this experience, I can just tell you I knew without a doubt this is where I needed to be, and there was no place on Earth I would rather be.

That Was Unexpected

About to leave Hong Kong International Airport

As we show our boarding passes, the United representative told us we were upgraded to business class free of charge. When we asked how this happened, she tells us she doesn’t know and it’s just what the system is telling her. Talk about our lucky day!  International business class is totally different than domestic business class from what we were about to discover.

As we walk on board a male Asian flight attendant asks what’s in the nice wooden box, and I mention that it’s my mom’s remains and I’m taking her home to Vietnam. He suddenly gives me his full attention, and with his hands pressed together in front of his chest, bows respectfully. That was very moving. As we walk to our seats, which are probably only 10 feet from where we walked in, we just cannot believe the amount of space we now have to ourselves. The chairs are leather, adjustable in many different positions and can recline fully, and we have our own video monitor to watch TV or use the flight locator information anytime we want to. I also found a personal sky phone attached to my seat, but the $10 a minute charge is something I don’t want to pay.

As we start to store our carry-ons the flight attendants actually help us and then serve us complimentary champagne. Another flight attendant asks what’s in the box, and after I tell her she responds, “Would you like your Mom to fly home in first class for her last trip home?” I was stunned by the generous offer and took her up one it.

The rest of the two hour flight was fantastic. After “suffering” in coach for 17 hours, this life of luxury is something else. Hot towels, table clothes, cloth napkins, real silverware, and more food than you can eat. But once again, no iced-tea, but I’m not complaining.
