Jersey Numbers Explained

Some examples:

  • 17 – Plaxico Burress: He signed his free-agent contract March 17.
  • 18 – Peyton Manning: 18 was the number worn in high school by his older brother, Cooper, who later was diagnosed with spinal stenosis.
  • 22 – Roger Clemens: Clemens had worn 21 with the Red Sox and Blue Jays, but that number wasn’t available when he joined the Yankees. So he reversed the numerals and wore 12. But when he didn’t pitch well, he switched to 22 because his son’s favorite football player was Emmitt Smith.
  • 23 – Michael Jordan – 23 is half of 45 (well, roughly), which was the number worn by his older brother, Larry.
  • 40 – Joe Forte: Say his last name out loud.
  • 61 – Josh Beckett: Wanted to wear 19 but it was taken by Mike Lowell, so he rotated it 180 degrees to get 61.
  • 85 – Petr Klima: He defected to the West in 1985.
  • 87 – Sidney Crosby: Born on 8/7/87.
  • 96 – Bill Voiselle: His hometown was Ninety Six, S.C.

Woman Wins Mega Toilet

Marcia Luham of Oro Valley spends about an hour each day entering online sweepstakes with hopes of winning a car, a new house or an oversized check from Ed McMahon.

But what she won instead was a toilet.

Not just any toilet, though. It’s a bathroom connoisseur’s dream. This mega-toilet is worth $5,000 and is equipped with a 20-inch flat screen TV, an Xbox 360 video-game system and beer tap, among other things.

The prize — which was up for grabs in the Roto-Rooter “Pimped out John” Sweepstakes — also has attached a Gateway laptop, TiVo, DVD player, refrigerator and an iPod with a stereo docking station that doubles as a toilet-tissue holder.

7th-graders face decision: Kill a rabbit or go without meat

PERRYVILLE, Ark. – Seventh-graders participating in a Heifer International program that recreates living conditions in third-world countries voted to have rabbit for dinner, and some were horrified when the animal was butchered before their eyes.

After students from Kirksey Middle School in Rogers elected to have meat for dinner, a worker in Heifer’s Global Village program broke the animal’s neck, cut off its head and prepared the meat for dinner.

“If I had known my daughter was going to watch them slaughter a rabbit, she wouldn’t have went,” said Mike Story, whose daughter began crying when asked how the trip had gone. “To her, a rabbit is a pet, so it was like watching a pet die.”

Heifer officials said the challenge _ slaughter a rabbit or go meatless _ has been presented many times before to Rogers students without objections. Two parents complained after their daughters returned home from the two-day trip Tuesday.
