Camp Okutta

Posters for Camp Okutta have recently been appearing in various Canadian cities. Camp Okutta is described as an adventure camp for kids. But in addition to normal activities such as hiking and games, kids also get a summer of “throwing grenades, shooting AK-47 assault rifles, and receiving minefield training — all for children aged eight through 12.”

Some people have been so outraged by the signs that they’ve ripped them down. Sarah Heywood is one of these people. She told CBC News that, “I immediately thought, wow, this is real, this is happening, people are now actually providing these kinds of services and opportunities for people who actually allow their children to go and experience something like that here in Canada.”

Actually, the posters are a marketing hoax designed by War Child Canada. The intention is to raise awareness about camps around the world training child soldiers.

Former state employee wins $150,000 in reverse discrimination case

Mark Pasternak said he lost his state job helping troubled youths because he couldn’t stand working under a black boss who called him racist names like “cracker,” “polack” and “stupid white boy.” Pasternak was dismissed from his position as a youth worker with the state Office of Children and Family Services in 1999. After a rare reverse racial discrimination trial in Buffalo’s federal court, a jury Tuesday awarded Pasternak $150,000. Jurors found that his former boss, Tommy E. Baines, discriminated against him racially and created a hostile working environment.

Every morning for as long as she can remember, Nicky Taylor — like millions of other women — has carried out her ‘getting ready’ routine. It starts with shower gel, shampoo and conditioner, includes mouthwash, cleanser and a moisturiser, and ends with an array of age-reversing serums, make-up, hair gel, deodorant, toothpaste and perfume.

Exfoliating scrubs, nail varnishes and cellulite-busting creams are often thrown into the mix, too. It is a ritual that not only sets Nicky up for the day but one she has always believed was essential to keeping her looking good and feeling well.

But over the past six weeks, Nicky, 42, has cut this daily routine, and all the products associated with it, out of her life altogether. Yes, for 40 days and 40 nights, there has been no showering, no hair washing, no teeth cleaning and no deodorant.
