Hillary Clinton’s Religion and Politics

Over the past year, we’ve interviewed dozens of Clinton’s friends, mentors, and pastors about her faith, her politics, and how each shapes the other. And while media reports tend to characterize Clinton’s subtle recalibration of tone and style as part of the Democrats’ broader move to recapture the terrain of “moral values,” those who know her say there’s far more to it than that.

Through all of her years in Washington, Clinton has been an active participant in conservative Bible study and prayer circles that are part of a secretive Capitol Hill group known as the Fellowship. Her collaborations with right-wingers such as Senator Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) and former Senator Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) grow in part from that connection. “A lot of evangelicals would see that as just cynical exploitation,” says the Reverend Rob Schenck, a former leader of the militant anti-abortion group Operation Rescue who now ministers to decision makers in Washington. “I don’t….there is a real good that is infected in people when they are around Jesus talk, and open Bibles, and prayer.”

Debating the future of hip hop

16257262.jpegIt looks like 50 Cent might be retiring at the ripe old age of 32.

The Queens, N.Y., rapper announced a few weeks ago that if his new album, “Curtis,” did not outsell Kanye West’s new collection, “Graduation,” during their first week in stores that he would call it quits as a solo recording artist.

Well, both albums hit the shelves Tuesday, and early results suggest that 50’s sales aren’t as big as his words.

Churches Banned From Town Square?

The Jefferson City Council will vote today whether to ban churches from the storefronts around the town’s central square.Parking requirements and building codes have kept pastors from setting up houses of worship in Jefferson storefronts so far.

However, with a $600,000 streetscape project in the works and hopes to expand Jefferson’s downtown dining options with several outdoor dining areas, city council members are worried churches could keep restaurants that want to serve alcohol out of the town’s new real estate.

At least one local church leader feels the ban is putting the town’s desire for restaurant-fueled tax revenue above Jefferson’s spiritual well-being.

The proposed amendment to Jefferson’s zoning standards would prohibit churches, temples, synagogues and other houses of worship from operating on land covered by the city’s Central Business District zoning designation.

NFL Week 1 Recap

I’m trying to think of a good excuse why I came in LAST in MY fantasy football league – but I have a bag full of nothing other than to say I must spend too much time blogging rather than researching for a decent fantasy squad.  My new goal is not to come in last.  The two guys in first more than doubled my point value.

In other BON NFL news, my prognostication results were 11 for 16 or 69% correct.  Not too shabby, but not quite as good as my new blogging friend from Atlanta.
