  • The weekend before Christmas is set aside for all of WifeGeeding’s siblings to travel with their families home to East Texas so their parents can have all their grandchildren together at one time. Unluckily, BoyGeeding was diagnosed with the flu and we couldn’t make the journey. I was really bummed out. Not for me, but for my in-laws, though I will admit when I see my children interact with them it gives me a slight glimpse of how my parents would have been fantastic grandparents. I was bummed out for my kids who lost a chance to play with their cousins and miss out on giving and receiving presents. I was bummed out for WifeGeeding doesn’t get to see her family as often as she’d like and knows these times have a finite limit. Granted, this wasn’t a real tragedy, we don’t live in war-torn Syria and everyone is in relatively good health, but it still bummed me out. To somewhat make up for it, I had a nice floral arrangement delivered on behalf of the kids. It’s also somewhat become a tradition for me to bring my mother-in-law flowers every Christmas gathering and I didn’t want to break a good streak.
  • Our pediatrician isn’t a fan of Tamiflu but said if we’re open to alternative medicine to give elderberry a try. He said his family takes it and studies have shown it helps decrease symptoms of the flu by three days and strengthens the immune system. Here’s a WSJ article about it if you are interested.
  • I bet a lot of parents, one time or another, expecting too much of youth and have caught themselves focusing too much on reprimanding and finding fault and fear it’s become a habit.

  • Yes, my middle name is Walter. In the picture at the top of the post, I think I’ve got a bit of a Walter White appeal.
  • On Saturday we started to wonder how old DogGeedingII is so we pulled out his AKC pedigree paperwork. It turned out that Saturday was his actual seventh birthday so we threw him a little party.

    • Hamill is a great storyteller and does a great Harrison Ford impression.
  • Spoiler Free Star Wars Thoughts:
    • I watched it 8:30 AM on a Sunday morning by myself. I fear people spoiling things either on purpose or accident. For instance, Corby Davidson saw it and tweeted jokingly that a character died. Simply by joking about it, I now knew that character’s death was out of the realm of possibility. I also saw a heading of an article mentioning what we may be able to infer about a character’s past. That annoyed me because I now know the movie was going to address that character’s past.
    • It was entertaining which I guess is all I can ask for a movie. They took some liberties I appreciated but there were some I just didn’t like. Older generations of fans will like it less than millennials and kids will love it.
    • I’m not going to like a Star Wars movie just because it’s a Star Wars movie. It wasn’t what I hoped for.
    • It felt weird knowing this was the last time I’d see Carrie Fisher as Leia.
    • The best of the Star Wars movies outside of the original trinity would be Rogue One.
  • SPOILER WARNINGS after the jump.

Special Delivery in Oklahoma City

“It’s the Christmas season and delivery people are busy. Let’s hope none of them have a bad day like this. I heard a very loud noise outside, so we ran to see what occurred. We found the mailman and his truck in the neighbor’s yard and house. After watching our home surveillance, we found that he had hit a mailbox, fallen out of his truck and got run over., followed by the mail truck crashing into the house. Thankfully, he was okay minus a few cuts and scrapes.”

  • I told you yesterday that the flu was confirmed for two students in BoyGeeding’s class and they had a total of eight students out sick. The next day a total of ten students in his class were out sick. As a precautionary measure, the school nurse took the temperature of each child. BoyGeeding was just a degree high and the school called and said we could take him home, but since he displayed no other symptoms and was feeling fine we left him in. His sister, on the other hand, had to go to the doctor but it’s only a viral infection she’s fighting.
  • I watched just a few minutes of NBC’s Thursday Night Football and was surprised to see a Charlie Hough graphic. The announcers were talking about Adam Vinatieri playing at least ten years for two different teams and they transitioned that into players in other sports, which is why I saw Charlie Hough in a Texas Rangers uniform for a few seconds. Gosh, I couldn’t stand Charlie Hough as a kid because he didn’t look anything like what I thought an athlete was supposed to look like. But over time, I started to appreciate him and the knuckleball.
  • I mentioned my internal clock has been off, that I’ve been thinking I’m a day ahead. Yesterday I was really thrown off thinking I was a day behind. Last night I turned on The TICKET and “Intentional Grounding” was on. That show is typically broadcast on a Wednesday so I freaked out for a moment.

  • The Dallas Morning News – Evangelical churches are embracing liturgy to make the megachurch more personal
    • I first experienced this at Irving Bible Church, nine years ago? At first, with my Baptist background, I thought it felt “too Catholic” as did many others with similar backgrounds. But once I let down my guard and opened up my mind and heart, I really started to appreciate this “older” and more formal way of worship and thought it brought more significance to the Advent season. My view of Advent went from the lighting of five candles to one of true waiting and preparation, it was a renewal of faith of sorts, and I had the liturgy to thank.

    • The feathered, emoji-like creatures of ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ join Ewoks in the adorable-character canon. But with great cuteness comes great responsibility. There are some who hate saying “aww” when they see a ‘Star Wars’ movie. Will porgs make or break Rian Johnson’s installment for these barbarians?
  • “Snownado” captured on video
    • A hiker filmed a rare “snownado” while walking in Poland’s Tatra National Park on Sunday, December 10th. A snownado forms when a mass of cold air passes over a warmer surface while variable wind speeds and directions in between the two cause the rising air to spin and pick up loose snow.
