“Winning” Super Bowl shirts end up in Nicaragua

MANAGUA (Reuters) – Shirts and caps proclaiming the victory of the New England Patriots — when the American football team actually lost the latest Super Bowl — have ended up in the hands of poor Nicaraguan children.Hundreds of shirts and caps, which had been manufactured in advance to celebrate the Patriots’ expected victory over the New York Giants, were handed over to children in the southern city of Diriamba.

“The children are the winners,” said Miriam Diaz, of World Vision, a Christian humanitarian organization.

World Vision has links with the National Football League, or NFL, and every year helps out poor children in Latin America and Africa with the unwanted “winners” shirts of the team that actually loses the Super Bowl.

Winners’ shirts and other garments are produced in advance so players and fans can put them on to celebrate immediately after the final whistle of the game. Garments of the losing team are obviously unwanted.

The Giants stunned the previously undefeated Patriots 17-14 in this year’s Super Bowl.

No oil-based products for a year

What happens when a determined young family gives up all oil-based products for a year?Filmmaker John Webster and his family decided to own up to their transgressions and kick their addiction to oil. They committed to a one-year “oil detox”. It’s quite simple really: the family will go on with their suburban lives, but without using any fossil fuels, driving cars or flying in airplanes. They won’t buy anything packaged in plastic like food, makeup, shampoo, toothpaste or kids’ toys. This last item proves a particular challenge to Webster’s two young sons.

Recipes for Disaster shows that at the core of the impending climate catastrophe are those little failures that we as individuals make every day, and which are so much a part of human nature. And a lot of it has to do with oil consumption.

This charming and intimate “family drama” reveals the overwhelming challenge the Webster’s have taken on. But despite the initial shocks, by using logic, sound judgement and common sense, this family does what it takes to combat the existing recipes for disaster that we all blindly follow.

BLT Candles

bltcandles.jpg

I’ve invented Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato votive candles. Maybe I’m crazy, but here’s how my mind works: I love the smell of bacon cooking. I fantasize about having bacon grilling on the stove day and night. In my philosophic musings I asked myself what is better than a BLT? As much as I try, I can’t eat a BLT at every meal and I can’t grill bacon 24 hours a day. Then I asked myself: ‘What is the meaning of Bacon? What is the meaning of Lettuce? What is the meaning of Tomato?’ What is the meaning of life? Then the epiphany: BLT-scented votive candles! Isn’t it obvious? One votive candle scented with the aroma of bacon. One votive scented with the aroma of lettuce. One votive scented with the aroma of tomatoes. They are sensual, sexy and tantalizing. You may want to light them in your kitchen, office or bedroom or wherever you seek sensual pleasure and enlightenment; by yourself or with someone special. Depending on your need and sensual mood, you can light them as a set or individually.
