Survey: Americans switching faiths, dropping out

(AP) — The U.S. religious marketplace is extremely volatile, with nearly half of American adults leaving the faith tradition of their upbringing to either switch allegiances or abandon religious affiliation altogether, a new survey finds.

The study released Monday by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life is unusual for it sheer scope, relying on interviews with more than 35,000 adults to document a diverse and dynamic U.S. religious population.

While much of the study confirms earlier findings — mainline Protestant churches are in decline, non-denominational churches are gaining and the ranks of the unaffiliated are growing — it also provides a deeper look behind those trends, and of smaller religious groups.

The U.S. Religious Landscape Survey estimates the United States is 78 percent Christian and about to lose its status as a majority Protestant nation, at 51 percent and slipping.

More than one-quarter of American adults have left the faith of their childhood for another religion or no religion at all, the survey found. Factoring in moves from one stream or denomination of Protestantism to another, the number rises to 44 percent.

19 Years Ago Today

Jerry Jones bought the Dallas Cowboys and this little 13 year old vowed never to root for the Cowboys again after the firing of Tom Landry.  Wow, time flies.

In those 19 years:

  • 3 Super Bowls
  • 7 Divisional Championships
  • 11 Playoff Appearances
  • 6 Coaches after Tom Landry
  • 1 Facelift

I really bring all this up because of something I remember back in 1989.  His name kept appearing, but the local TV and newspapers didn’t have one photo of the guy - there was nothing in their stock photo file.  Now his mug is everywhere, and with today’s technology there’s always an available photograph of someone.  I believe this was one of the first photos of the guy.

Edit: Here’s a nice little story about this picture and here’s video of the press conference.

Edit Edit:  Another nice (but a little dated) story about that day.  Link

A small kink in my football watching plans

COLLEGE STATION, Texas, Feb. 25 (UPI) — The annual Texas-Texas A&M football game is returning to its traditional Thanksgiving night schedule.

I don’t watch a whole lot of college football, but I always make an effort to watch two games every year:  Texas-OU and and Texas-Texas A&M.  But with the NFL Network airing a Thanksgiving night game, I feel a little torn – but I’m sure I’ll manage.
