After 75 years of marriage, Fort Worth couple died 5 hours apart
FORT WORTH — The routine was familiar to the family and friends of J.C. and Josie Cox.
When the couple visited, they’d sit a spell and talk, perhaps for an hour, maybe two. Then, without saying a word, Mr. Cox would stand up, grab his hat and coat, and silently walk to the front door. It was his way of saying he was ready to go, and Mrs. Cox, his wife of 75 years, always followed.
Last week, at an Arlington nursing home, Mr. Cox, 100, clutching his wife’s hand, died of complications from pneumonia. Five hours later, Mrs. Cox, 96, followed her husband. She had suffered from a heart condition.
I saw this story on the local news and was touched seeing two caskets side-by-side.
For the few Friday Night Lights fans out there
NEW YORK – “Friday Night Lights” will shine again next season. The acclaimed football-and-family drama will return on NBC for a third year after 13 new episodes have aired on satellite-television provider DirecTV, in an unusual deal designed to spread production costs while rekindling a series whose audience until now has been as small as it is fervent.
The series will unfold weekly for DirecTV subscribers beginning Oct. 1. Then, early in 2009, it will be seen on NBC, which made the announcement Wednesday. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
Getting a jump on broadcast networks’ customary mid-May “upfront” announcements, NBC dubbed its presentation an “infront,” laying out prime-time plans (subject to change, of course) all the way through summer 2009, when reality fare will dominate.
Come fall, four new scripted series are slated:
Arkansas reinstitutes minimum marriage age
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Arkansas’ marriage-age crisis is over.
A law that mistakenly allowed anyone even toddlers — to marry with parental permission was repealed by a measure signed into law Wednesday by Gov. Mike Beebe, ending months of embarrassment for the state and confusion for county clerks.
Lawmakers didn’t realize until after the end of last year’s regular session that a law they approved, intended to establish 18 as the minimum age for marriage, instead removed the minimum age to marry entirely. An extraneous “not” in the bill allowed anyone who was not pregnant to marry at any age with permission.
The bill read: “In order for a person who is younger than eighteen (18) years of age and who is not pregnant to obtain a marriage license, the person must provide the county clerk with evidence of parental consent to the marriage.”
Some lawmakers called for a special session last year, saying the error would make it easy for pedophiles to take advantage of the law. Gov. Mike Beebe said he didn’t see any imminent crisis and said the chances of children marrying under the law were slim.
