Flatulent whales caught in the act

Scientists have photographed a giant gas bubble emanating from a whale, suggesting that flatulence is just as common for ocean mammals as it is for humans and many other terrestrial animals.

The picture, released last week by scientists from the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) in Tasmania, was taken by the captain of a U.S. research ship the Nathaniel B. Palmer, while on expedition between Marguerite Bay and Palmer Station, Antarctica.

“The picture is of an Antarctic minke whale taken from the bow of a ship,” said AAD principal research scientist Dr Nick Gales. “The white bits in the photo are pieces of ice-floe, the stream of pinky colour behind the whale is a faecal plume – a.k.a. “poo” – the large circle in the water is indeed the physical eruption of the whale’s flatulence.”

He and his colleagues are working to determine what it is that higher marine predators eat, and where they go to eat it. Instead of resorting to killing whales, the Australian Antarctic Division scientists have developed a method that allows them to collect whale faeces and study its DNA to figure out what the whale recently consumed.

The DNA work is linked to whale protection, since countries such as Norway, Iceland, and Japan have argued that whale numbers should be reduced to stabilise commercial fishing stocks.

Bag of Randomness

  • My Twitter experiment is over.
  • SisterGeeding is driving to NYC to start a new chapter in her life in a U-Haul.  That should be a fun road trip, and if gas prices weren’t so darn high, WifeGeeding and I would take another road trip.
  • I don’t think Megan Henderson of KDFW is aging very well.
  • I find it interesting that Jayne Mansfield studied physics and drama at SMU.  I bet the physics majors couldn’t be happier having a lady like that in class.
  • A very unflattering picture of Madonna.
  • Since I created a contact page more people have been contacting me.  I get some intersting questions like how much money do I make with this website (I almost break even) and a few business propositions.
  • Sometimes I wish fast food places would post what the people in front of me in the drive-through have ordered.  I was in the drive-through at What-A-Burger Saturday night and the Suburban in front of me at the window didn’t move for about ten minutes which made wonder what the heck did they order?
  • I slept past 10:30 a.m. on Saturday – that hasn’t happened in a very long time.
  • I emailed my congressman about a particular issue and a week later in the mailbox I received a generic letter from him thanking me for my concern but it was over a different issue.
  • WifeGeeding cleaned the pantry – there were a lot of items past the expiration date.

TiVo Gets Its Own Shopping Channel: Amazon

Online shopping addicts beware. A TiVo-Amazon partnership will soon allow TiVo customers to purchase items via Amazon.com without ever leaving the couch.

With Product Purchase, TiVo users can click over to Amazon on the TV screen using their remote control and purchase items discussed on a certain TV show.

Want a few of Oprah’s favorite things? Intrigued by a book mentioned on The Colbert Report? Click over to TiVo’s Universal Swivel Search function, find the items, and purchase them directly.

The service launches Tuesday and is available on broadband-connected Series 2, Series 3, and TiVo HD DVRs.

It will launch in conjunction with four specific TV shows: the Oprah Winfrey Show; The Colbert Report; The Ellen DeGeneres Show; and Burn Notice. But if a “product is seen or advertised on any TV show or network, and sold by Amazon.com it can be merchandised to viewers through TiVo,” Evan Young, director of broadband services for TiVo, said in a statement.
