Latest NYC 9/11 search finds 72 human remains

NEW YORK — New York City officials say a renewed search this year of debris in and around the World Trade Center site has recovered 72 human remains.

The sifting of more than 800 cubic yards of debris recovered from ground zero and underneath roads around the lower Manhattan site began in April and ended Friday.

The greatest number of remains — 37 — were found from material underneath West Street, a highway on the west side of ground zero. The new debris was uncovered as construction work made new parts of the site accessible.

The city began a renewed search for human remains in 2006. More than 1,800 remains have been found.

Some have been matched to previously unidentified Sept. 11 victims.

I find it amazing that the world’s tallest building started construction in 2004 and was completed in January 2010, but there still isn’t a new World Trade Center in NYC.

But then again, I’m amazed they still found human remains after all this time.

MN woman shares social security number with NY woman

MINNEAPOLIS — For more than 2 decades, Alyssa Green of Minneapolis has lived her own, independent life. But when she applied for a student loan for college a few years ago, she learned a troubling fact. Another Alyssa Green, with the same birth date, had the exact same social security number. This Alyssa Green lives in Albany, New York.

“Yes the same number,” Minneapolis Alyssa explained, rolling her eyes. When she tried to get money for college, she was told “I already had a financial aid loan but I never applied for one.”

Then, Minneapolis Alyssa had her wages garnished for a child that wasn’t her own. Turns out, she had been paying for New York Alyssa’s child. New York Alyssa cleared up the confusion in court after the two ladies of the same names talked over the phone.

“Basically she thought I took her number and I thought she took my number,” Minneapolis Alyssa said.

Sex offender wants permission to attend church

A New Hampshire sex offender on probation is asking the state’s highest court to allow him to go to church with a chaperone.

The case of Jonathan Perfetto marks the first time the New Hampshire Supreme Court is being asked to rule whether a probation condition that effectively bars church attendance violates constitutional rights to religious freedom.

Perfetto, 35, of Manchester, was convicted in 2002 of possessing child pornography. A condition of his probation is that he have no contact with children age 16 and under.

A lower court denied Perfetto’s request to attend Jehovah’s Witnesses services with a church elder acting as chaperone.

The New Hampshire Civil Liberties Union and Perfetto maintain the chaperone would eliminate any risk to children, and stressed that Perfetto was not convicted of assaulting a child. The state counters that public safety trumps Perfetto’s religious rights.
