North Dakota May Not Be a State

(NEWSER) – North Dakota has been a state since 1889—or has it? An 82-year-old government watchdog and local historian has been trying, for 16 years, to get someone to notice an important flaw in the state’s constitution that he says renders North Dakota’s very statehood invalid. The state constitution omits the executive branch, the governor, and other top officials when outlining who must take the oath of office, John Rolczynski notes. This puts it in opposition with the federal constitution, thus theoretically making the state’s version invalid.

That could mean North Dakota is actually still a territory, ValleyNewsLive.com reports. But don’t worry, North Dakotans: State Senator Tim Mathern has introduced a bill to fix the wording, and voters will simply need to approve the constitutional amendment in November 2012.

Compton High School Star Donates $40,000 From Free-Throw Winnings

All too often when we think of athletes and sports these days, the first thoughts are of greed and selfishness.

Well, here is a story of true generosity and selflessness. Three months after Allan Guei won $40,000 in a free-throw shooting contest for top students at Compton High School, he donated his entire take to the other seven finalists.

Guei, a star high school basketball player who is now headed to California State University Northridge on a full scholarship, realized that the other players in the contest needed the money more than he did. Under NCAA rules, Guei could have kept the money for himself, but he made a different decision.

“I’ve already been blessed so much and I know we’re living with a bad economy, so I know this money can really help my classmates,” Guei said in a release from the school. “It was the right decision.”

New Bible gives Jesus a ‘Human’ touch

In the newest English-language Bible translation to hit bookshelves, e-readers and online sites, Jesus is no longer the “Son of Man.”

He’s “the Human One.”

The Tennessean religion reporter Bob Smietana tours the text, pointing out notable changes in the freshly published Common English Bible start in the beginning. Except that “In the beginning…” is gone, too. This Bible begins, “When God began to create the heavens and the earth…”
And Adam is simply lower case “human” until Eve comes along in Genesis 2:23

The human said, “This one finally is bone from my bones and flesh from my flesh. She will be called a woman because from a man she was taken.”

Like every Bible translation that comes down the pike, the folks behind this — a coalition of Protestant denominational publishing houses owned by the United Methodist Church, one of the nation’s largest denominations, and the Disciples of Christ, Presbyterian Church U.S.A., Episcopal Church, and the United Church of Christ — want to make holy writ more accessible.
