  • I think the world’s most wasted individual food item has to be the tomato, by both weight and volume. I eat fast food much more than I should, and I’m amazed at the amount of ketchup and salsa packets that get thrown in, but I never asked for.
  • I recently heard an old Jim Carrey graduation speech in which he asked, “So you do things out of fear or out of love?” It made me ponder about a lot of my actions, especially as it’s come to the divorce and the alienation of my children.
  • I asked my friends at trivia night this question I found on Reddit, “What’s the cringiest movie scene of all time?” All our answers were the same, the curb scene in American History X. Just thinking about the noise the teeth make on the curb sent shudders up our spines.
  • Yesterday, the Musers discussed sandwiches and claimed to be the “sandwich show of record.” Junior Miller stated how he only ate peanut butter sandwiches without jelly because that’s how his mother made them. I’m in the same boat, and have never tried the combination of peanut butter and jelly. Just the thought of combing the two doesn’t seem appealing. But then again, I’m the same person who will only eat fruit raw and by itself. So, I would eat an apple, but not an apple pie. I eat grapes, but won’t touch jelly or jam. I’ll eat an orange, but will steer clear of orange chicken.
  • I think it’s a bit of a tradition for presidential candidates to be asked their favorite sandwich, and most will say the peanut butter and jelly sandwich. You know, a sandwich of the people. But for me, it’s the club sandwich, hands down. It’s an all-inclusive sandwich. You combine three meats, ham, turkey, and bacon. You have the choice of two or three slices of toasted bread. I used to say you had to have three slices of bread to make it an official club, but no longer willing to die on that hill. Then you have your choices of cheese and spread along with lettuce and tomato. It simply can’t be beat.
  • Yesterday was National Grilled Cheese Sandwich day. I’ve never ordered one or made one for myself. I have finished uneaten portions of my children’s and have never eaten an entire grilled cheese sandwich.
  • Baskin-Robbins is getting a makeover. Here’s what’s going to happen and a little history which may answer some questions you always wondered about.
    • The 77-year old ice cream shop is tweaking its logo, employee uniforms and packaging to update the brand. It’s the first major update for Baskin-Robbins since 2006, according to the company. It will also sell merchandise, including bikes and bucket hats, from a dedicated online store for the first time. And Baskin-Robbins will unveil new flavors as part of the refresh.
    • Brothers-in-law Irvine “Irv” Robbins and Burton “Burt” Baskin founded the ice cream company in 1945. But they didn’t brand it as “Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream” until 1953. “The original advertising campaign in 1953 was built around circus iconography,” said Grandinetti. That campaign used the pink and brown that Baskin-Robbins is reviving today. That was also the year that Baskin-Robbins introduced the idea of 31 flavors, one for every day of the month. Both the new and old logos have “31” hidden between the B and the R when the letters are placed together. Today, Baskin-Robbins has hundreds of flavors in its portfolio.

  • Josh Hamilton was correct in saying Arlington or the DFW area isn’t a baseball city. Texans never take criticism well, no matter how correct. And it doesn’t matter that it was on Monday during school, they’ve sold out home openers during under those circumstances before, and cities like Boston don’t have trouble with it. The ball club used to have a small town everybody is a part of it feel. Now, it feels so corporate and sterile. But then again, I’m just a casual baseball fan.

  • Louisiana pastor who taped children’s mouths defends action, says students bullied teacher
    • A Louisiana pastor, “Survivor” contestant and Republican politician was arrested last week and charged with three counts of cruelty to juveniles after taping children’s mounts shut for talking too much in class. He defended his actions Monday. The Rev. John Raymond, founder and headmaster of Slidell’s Lakeside Christian Academy, issued a 1,100-word statement on the school’s website blaming the students for bullying a teacher and insisting none of the children was harmed. Raymond, who is an elected member of the Louisiana Republican Party governing board, said a teacher approached him in tears threatening to quit because a group of students was continually disrupting her class by talking.
  • DFW International ranks as world’s second-busiest airport in 2021
    • DFW International Airport was the world’s second-busiest air travel hub for passengers in 2021, even though traffic was still far behind pre-pandemic levels, and it trailed only Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. DFW soared last year on the strength of U.S. domestic leisure travelers with 62 million passengers, leapfrogging other airports in the country such as Los Angeles and Chicago O’Hare that rely on international passengers for a larger percentage of traffic, according to Airports Council International.

  • But this is a sweet story – After starting Rangers’ home opener, Taylor Hearn gets postgame interview question from his sister
    • Taylor started laughing when he saw it was Robyn asking the question. He then became sincere very quick. He told his younger sister that he wanted to set an example for her and show that he could make it to a stage like Monday’s, even if he once doubted it. He then thanked her for her support. “Despite the results, I didn’t really even care if I won the game or we lost or whatever,” Taylor said. “I was just more happy to see you, that you were here.”

  • The ex will occasionally show up at the church I still attend with the children. I used to six next to them until she sent me an email and asked that I not to, so I complied. She also said that the children will choose who they will sit with. I expressed the concern that I don’t like the children having to literally choose a parent, but she never replied. Most of the time, the when the kids enter with her, they will sit next to me. This has happened every time except once. Our son stayed and sat next to his mother, but our daughter has always sat next to me. Yesterday, she attended church along with our daughter. Our son stayed the night at a friend’s house, so he was a no show. This time, the ex told our daughter that during her possession period; she has to sit next to her. Months ago, these alienation tactics would annoy me. Now, I simply expect it, and it’s almost liberating because it’s so predictable. My feelings aren’t hurt, but I see it hurts the children’s, and that’s what bothers me.
  • Our daughter had a softball game on Friday night. I sat by myself for almost the entire game, and I noticed the ex did the same. It’s stupid we can’t get along well enough that we can’t sit and support our daughter together for a few hours at a time.
  • I was slotted to work most of the weekend. Since it was my weekend without the kids, I made time to watch The Batman. It’s just shy of three-hours long. I love comic book stuff and like to see these different variations of Batman. While I enjoyed it, I just couldn’t get past the casting of Robert Pattison. He seems like a great guy, and in interviews, I really like his approach to getting to know the character and his appreciation for previous iterations. But, this Batman seemed to emo.

  • I can speak most for Tiger Woods as we both are half-Asian, military veterans as fathers, divorced, parents to a boy and a girl, are three months apart in age, and both had a spinal fusion. I’m curious to know what type of pain medication he’ll be taking while playing golf, and I wonder what’s allowable within the rules.
  • Working with the ex it exhausting, especially since she won’t verybally communicate. Oh well, only eight more years of this.
  • I’m sure Barry over at LiberallyLean really hates me, and I’m about to give him another supporting reason. For the life of me, I can never remember the difference between “tornado watch” and “tornado warning.” I’m sure I’m overthinking it:
    • Be on the watch for a tornado. Now that one has been spotted, we are now warning you to take shelter.
    • We are warning you a tornado is highly probable. One has been spotted, now watch out for it and take shelter.

  • Ohio police officer resigns after not issuing a citation for four years
  • I’m one of those who don’t think the rules should be the same for both college and professional sports. I just appreciate the differences, strategies, and implications both cause. The pass interference penalty may be the most obvious example. But, I got curious about why does college basketball has halves and high school and pros have quarters. Using this as a source, here are my findings and some interesting tidbits.
    • The NBA and NCAA use time in roughly the same way. The NBA has four 12 minute quarters (48 minutes in total) and the NCAA goes with two 20-minute halves (40 minutes in total). FIBA also uses four 10 minutes quarters to perfectly match the NCAA’s total time.
    • When Dr. James Naismith invented basketball, Rule 12 states, ““the time shall be two fifteen-minute halves, with five-minute rest in between.”
    • As such, in 1905 the official rules changed to extend the time to two twenty minutes halves with a 10-minute break in between them. Sound familiar? That is the same format the NCAA still uses to this day. However, the two half system did not stick for that long. In 1951 the game went through a huge change when the league decided to split it up into four 10-minute quarters. This rule was for both college basketball and the NBA. While that change stuck in professional basketball, it did not hold in college. In fact, the four-quarter system was only around for three short years in the NCAA. In 1954 college basketball went back to playing in halves while the NBA stayed with the quarter system. That created a break that still lasts to this day.
    • Some people believe colleges favor the two halves because it is how the first rules were put in place, while others think it was to separate themselves from other leagues. One of the leading theories is that it makes the game much more competitive. Two long halves tend to create closer games than four separate quarters. Close games not only lead to more excitement, but they can also lead to upsets. Two halves also create less stopping time, which gives the game a steady pace and keeps everything moving along. The more flow that exists, the better the games are to watch. While none of these theories have been absolutely proven one way or another, they do help suggest why one league goes with two halves and one goes with four quarters. Both work. It just comes down to preference.
