Bag of Randomness
- Remember that picture I posted the other day of the dog laying in front of the flag draped casket? Here are the details behind the picture.
- I wonder how Apple’s stock price will be affected today with the news that Steve Jobs is no longer CEO. I wonder if Steve Jobs will still be living by the end of the year, but that’s just speculation on my part.
- This is my favorite Steve Jobs story that comes from a NY Times article in Jan 2006:
In 1997, shortly after Mr. Jobs returned to Apple, the company he helped start in 1976, Dell’s founder and chairman, Michael S. Dell, was asked at a technology conference what might be done to fix Apple, then deeply troubled financially.
“What would I do?” Mr. Dell said to an audience of several thousand information technology managers. “I’d shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders.”
On Friday, apparently savoring the moment, Mr. Jobs sent a brief e-mail message to Apple employees, which read: “Team, it turned out that Michael Dell wasn’t perfect at predicting the future. Based on today’s stock market close, Apple is worth more than Dell. Stocks go up and down, and things may be different tomorrow, but I thought it was worth a moment of reflection today. Steve.”
- If there’s one thing I don’t maintenance wise around the house, it’s keeping track of changing the air filters.
- GeedingManor had a new roof put on yesterday. It didn’t bother ToddlerGeeding one bit and slept through all her naps.
- I bet if I was forced to work on roofs during summers while in college, my fall semester GPA would be a 4.0.
- Not that I wasn’t that far off from a 4.0 anyways.
- Well, for the most part.
- But then again, it was a Hardin-Simmons education.
- I remember walking though certain buildings in college and seeing fliers that advertised making over $10,000 a summer fishing in Alaska. If my father wasn’t so ill, I bet I would have tried that out one summer, but now with all the reality shows I see about Alaska fishing, I know there’s no way I could have survived such a feat.
- The most annoying thing about Storage Wars on A&E (other than Dave and his “yuuuup”) is that they often appraise their own stuff which inflates the value of their purchase. On the most interesting items, yes, they take them and get them appraised, but sometimes it seems they are just making up a price for things they find.
- In a preseason game, Chad Ochocinco got hit by a rookie, and the rookie was fined for the hit. Ochocinco is going to reimburse the rookie for the fine.
- Mark Cuban has a new idea to fix college football.
The Mindset List for this Year’s College Freshmen Class
Members of this year’s freshman class, most of them born in 1993, are the first generation to grow up taking the word “online” for granted and for whom crossing the digital divide has redefined research, original sources and access to information, changing the central experiences and methods in their lives. They have come of age as women assumed command of U.S. Navy ships, altar girls served routinely at Catholic Mass, and when everything from parents analyzing childhood maladies to their breaking up with boyfriends and girlfriends, sometimes quite publicly, have been accomplished on the Internet.
Check out the whole list here, but below is a sample:
- Ferris Bueller and Sloane Peterson could be their parents.
- American tax forms have always been available in Spanish.
- There has never been an official Communist Party in Russia.
- Video games have always had ratings
- Arnold Palmer has always been a drink
Bag of Randomness
- The Wall Street Journal thinks Sprint will be getting the iPhone this October. I’m the kind that don’t like getting the product that everyone else has (well, for the most part), so I’m still happy with my latest phone purchase.
- It’s just a different culture: $78 Million in Cash Found and Turned In After Japanese Quake
- The Dallas Morning News has a great feature in its religion blog that it runs about once a month. Basically, they pose a question to about 15 or so religious leaders (mostly in Texas) and post their responses. It’s an interesting way to see how each Christian denomination or another faith will approach an issue. Some past topics include Rick Perry’s Day of Prayer, sanctioning the death of bin Laden, if a religious school should reject the child of gay parents, God’s will and the presidency, and Are Texas immoral for supporting the death penalty. Since I’ve been studying church history and denominational differences over the past three years, I thought the latest topic was interesting to read: How do you interpret the Genesis creation story? I think I found Larry Bethune and William Lawrence’s answer the most interesting.
- An interesting infographic that looks at the topic of grade inflation in college: In the last 70 years, grades in college have been inflating. The almighty ‘A’, once a challenge to get with only 15% of grades hitting this magic letter, have nearly tripled. We’re approaching 50% of the total grades awarded in college being A’s.
