Stephen Colbert Loves the Catholic Church, Warts and All

NEW YORK — In a rare public moment out of character, actor Stephen Colbert told students at the Jesuit Fordham University on Friday that he loves the Roman Catholic Church no matter its human flaws.

The host of “The Colbert Report” talked about his faith in a discussion on humor and spirituality with New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan and the Rev. James Martin, author of “Between Heaven and Mirth” and the official chaplain of Colbert’s show.

Colbert, who has taught Sunday school classes to school-age children, said people in comedy often don’t understand how he could remain Catholic. But he said he views the church as teaching joy, which he called the “infallible sign of the presence of God.”

“I love my church – warts and all,” he said, before an audience of about 3,000 cheering students, who posted his quotes on Twitter using the organizers’ (hash)dolancolbert hashtag.

Colbert said people in comedy often make jokes at the expense of religion, but he makes jokes about what he called people’s misuse of religion in politics and other arenas. Still, he said, “If Jesus doesn’t have a sense of humor, I am in huge trouble.”

#onesmalltweet

Although legendary astronaut Neil Armstrong passed away last month at the age of 82, his legacy will always live on as the first man to set foot on the moon. The John F. Kennedy Library and Museum in New York has put together a clever project that lets Twitter users pay tribute by recreating Armstrong’s trip to the moon.

The experiment works through the use of the Twitter hashtag #onesmalltweet, which, when used in a tweet, adds 100 miles to the virtual journey. Each message is then displayed on the OneSmallTweet website as the trip approaches the final goal of 238,900 miles.

London cinema employees Ninjas to confront rude movie goers

The Prince Charles Cinema is said to be employing volunteer “ninjas” to regulate good behavior among the audience. The term “ninja” is being used loosely here — they’re really more like glorified ushers in black skintight bodysuits — but whatever you want to call them, it’s certainly an interesting way to keep the peace. More afer the jump.

The so-called ninjas are ordinary cinephiles who agree to “guard” screenings in exchange for free admission. When they spot a patron talking, texting, throwing popcorn, kicking seats, or otherwise engaging in rude behavior, they swoop down to give the jerk in question a talking-to. One of the program’s recent targets, moviegoer Abdul Stagg, recounted his experience:

I normally hate noisy people in cinemas, but I got a call from my friend just as the movie started and thought I could get away with taking it. The last thing I expected was two completely blacked-out people suddenly appearing by our seats and give me and my mates a warning to shut up. It was actually pretty terrifying at first, but then I realised it was a bit of a laugh and a great way to make it clear what I was doing was having an impact on those around me. It certainly made me hang up and shut up for the rest of the film.
