One in five Americans reports no religious affiliation, study says

One-fifth of U.S. adults say they are not part of a traditional religious denomination, new data from the Pew Research Center show, evidence of an unprecedented reshuffling of Americans’ spiritual identities that is shaking up fields from charity to politics.

But despite their nickname, the “nones” are far from godless. Many pray, believe in God and have regular spiritual routines.

The study presents a stark map of how political and religious polarization have merged in recent decades. Congregations used to be a blend of political affiliations, but that’s generally not the case anymore. Sociologists have shown that Americans are more likely to pick their place of worship by their politics, not vice versa.

Most And Least Christian Cities In America

Salt Lake City comes in at #1 on the list, but has an asterisk next to it since it’s including Mormons.  I know most of the people in my evangelical past, heck, I know a lot of people today that states Mormons aren’t Christians but are part of a cult.

But I wonder if most DFW folks, or Texans in general, are surprised that places like Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Boston are higher on the list than DFW (12), Houston (13) and San Antonio (9).

John Cusack pulls a “Say Anything” at a Peter Gabriel Concert during “In Your Eyes”

I’ve never seen the movie, but of course I’m familiar with this iconic scene.

I guess he didn’t go into to “full character” since all he really did was bring out a boom box, but it was still kinda cool. And who knew Gabriel could have an eleven-minute rendition of this song.
