A series of two studies recently found that people who were the worst at detecting bullshit not only grossly overestimated their detection ability, but also overestimated their ability compared to other people. In other words, they not only believe that they are better at detecting BS than they actually are, they also believe that they are better at it than the average person.
Yesterday, LL posted a graphic of 2022-2023 non-NCAA National Championships. One stood out. Out of all the schools to win “Hip Hop Dance,” I would have expected it to be BYU.
“Once a fetal heartbeat could be detected, typically around the sixth week of pregnancy … ”When I read this phrase in the New Yorker, referring to Texas’s first abortion ban, I shot off a letter to the editor. “This is misleading,” I wrote. “There is no heartbeat at six weeks because the fetus does not yet have a heart. As San Francisco OB-GYN Dr. Jennifer Kerns told NPR: ‘What we’re really detecting is a grouping of cells that are initiating some electrical activity. In no way is this detecting a functional cardiovascular system or a functional heart.’” I noted that “a six-week fetus is about the size and shape of a baked bean.”
Props to AMC for having a Band of Brothers marathon followed by a showing of Flag of Our Fathers for all of Memorial Day. Granted, I didn’t watch much of it, I need to watch that series. I’ve seen The Pacific and really enjoyed that.
It’s funny how our now former state AG, our top law enforcer, was complaining about the law not being fair as he was impeached. But, as LL stated, “The question remains: why now? He deserved to be impeached, but all of the allegations have been known for over two years. Why, suddenly, did they go after him now?”
Trump is calling our governor out for being silent on the impeachment of our AG. I actually agree with the orange man.
Before the divorce, I did not know that child support payments do not go directly to mothers from their ex-husbands. Instead, the state takes the money, puts it in a fund, invests it, and then takes money from the fund to give to the mothers. So, twice a month, I send $800 to the Texas Attorney General for my money to go into an investment fund. Texas makes a lot of money off of divorced families, and that’s why there’s little done to keep marriages together, it’s all about money.
My kids continue to suffer from the trauma of how their mother broke apart our family. I know this because they open up to me about it periodically. They ask questions about her actions that I don’t have the answer to. So, I asked the ex if she would have a conversation about this. She told me I should stop dwelling on the past. Well, I think she does nothing but avoid acknowledging and owning up to her past options. Somewhere there is a compromise, but so far I can’t find it. What doesn’t help is that she only wants to communicate through email. So much can be lost in the written text, especially when emotion is involved. It’s best to just act like an adult and have a verbal conversation.
@DallasTexasTV is a great follow on Twitter, but I don’t like how they won’t allow their tweets to be embedded on websites like mine. Anywho, here’s a tweet of highlights of the Allen high school graduation ceremony complete with fireworks and a drone show.
This is powerful from Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla
“You always hear people give glory to God and say 'thank you' when they're holding a trophy, but you never really hear it in times like this.”pic.twitter.com/VO0JkJplQL
I don’t want to be the star of the show. I prefer to be the person behind the scenes doing the work that helps make the person in the spotlight look good. Most folks want to be Maverick, I want to be Goose. I don’t want to be President Bartlett, I was to be Leo McGary. I don’t need the recognition, but it helps to know that I’m appreciated.
Maybe guys in my position aren’t supposed to reveal this, but one thing that hurts a lot is to see how effortlessly my ex has moved on with her life.
The bill allows schools to use a volunteer or employ chaplains “to provide support, services, and programs for students as assigned by the board of trustees of the district or the governing body of the school.” A school district can use funds allocated for school safety and security to support chaplains in their role, the same funds used for other counselors. Schools now have six months to vote on policies to either deny or allow chaplains into their schools.
This 60 Minutes Australia piece was interesting. I don’t think our reporters get some of this access. The general speaks like Bill Belichick and the Chinese representative talks like Donald Trump.
