The size of the United States compared to the moon

It was difficult for me to fathom the size of the moon, thus inspiring the creation of this map. For me, this map puts the scale of the moon much smaller than I previously imagined. But it’s really interesting hearing how others (already grasping the size of the moon) now see the US as larger. [Ed.: ‘MURICA, amirite?]

It was one definitely a weird challenge to take a “flat” map of something on a sphere and project it onto a smaller sphere. Certainly take it only as an approximation, but what intrigued me the most is that the distance spanning the continental United States is roughly equal to a little less than half the circumference of the moon.

  • BoyGeeding turns one tomorrow, which means we’re having a party, which means visitors, which means GeedingManor hasn’t been this clean in a very long time.
  • I’m not embarrassed to say that I recently listened to some Rich Mullins on purpose.
  • There’s a Progressive Insureance commercial on the radio where Flo sings “Why are strikes bad in baseball but good in bowlinnng . . .” which always stops me down.  A strike in baseball is only bad if your team is up for bat, but if your team is pitching, a strike is a very good thing.  Come on, Flo, you’re better than this.
  • I don’t often get queso at Fuzzy’s Tacos, but when I do, I always crack up because they put shredded cheese on top . . . it’s just cheese on top of cheese.
  • I’m not usually fond of women with short hair, but in “House of Cards”, Robin Wright pulls it off quite nicely.  One more thought about the show, in which I have about four episodes remaining, I think the worst actor is the man portraying Congressman Russo.
  • Over the past four or five years, DFW has been lucky with our sprots teams making the playoffs, but this year none may qualify.
  • Out of all the latest Internet fads, I’m actually getting a kick out of the Harlem Shake, and I guess it’s because it’s only 30-seconds compared to a whole song or music video, and more creative than plaking.  “The Daily Show” had a good version of it as they did it in reverse.

  • Breaking the world record for the longest kiss looks painful.
  • Chris Kyle had a plethora of Navy SEAL tridents pinned to his casket.
  • Interesting close up pictures of the sun taken from a man’s backyard
