  • I visited the Dallas Morning News website and the lead story was on the Baker Hotel in my hometown of Mineral Wells.  The mystery and nostalgia of that building has always captivated me, and I even have a picture of it hanging in my house.
  • I bought a Google Chromecast yesterday and so far I really like it.  I had a little trouble with setup as I couldn’t get my Chromebook to recognize the device, but I was able to complete the setup using my phone.  At first I was pretty concerned as video seemed to lag on the television, but after shutting down the computer and playing with it after an hour with numerous other videos the lagging was resolved.  One cool feature I like is that I can play video using one of my tabs on my Chrome browser casting it on the television and then being able to open another tab and surf without it affecting what’s on the television.  Also, the quality of the video was much higher than I expected.
  • There’s a lot of talk about Miley Cyrus’ song “Wrecking Ball” but I’ve never heard it and don’t have any plans on listening to it.
  • I heard a comedian say that all the Redskins need to do to keep their name is to change their mascot to the red potato.

  • New York Football Giants fans are stating Eli is having such a tough time this year because of offensive line problems.  Welcome to Tony Romo’s world, and imagine what he could do if he had a decent line.  Dang it, now that’s starting t sound like an Emmitt and Barry argument.
  • I had no idea how big Detroit is.  A ’60 Minutes’ segment said it was larger than San Fransico, Boston, and Manhatten combined.

  • I finally got around to watching Iron Man 3 and was pleasantly surprised to see former KDFW anchor Megan Henderson make two brief appearances.  It actually turns out she has ten acting credits.
  • I love how superhero movies can provide an escape from reality and push my imagination.
  • Like everyone else I thought the Longhorns were going to get killed, and when the broadcast started I was surprised that Big Game Brent Musburger was announcing.  Heck, I really only planning just watching the first half and then getting around to some house chores, thankfully I had to put off the house chores.
  • If there’s something I’m learning from Mack Brown, it’s how to deal with adversity.  I did enjoy his interview with Andy Roddick.
  • Of course Adrian Peterson is dealing with quite a bit of adversity right now.
  • Baylor plays a non-high school team on the road and the score is close and they are held under 40 points, go figure.  Watch out Baylor, November is coming.
  • The Houston Texans are consistent with throwing the pick-six.
  • I think House Republicans can get more concessions from the White House if they just agree to kick the can down the road.  On Friday the CBS Evening News had a segment about the number of people that have actually bought health insurance through the exchange website.  The government will provide numbers in November and then on a monthly basis, but so far the numbers they got from talking to people in the industry are pretty disappointing.  If House Republicans wait until some numbers are released they would have some strong evidence to support their claim that people don’t want Obamacare and that it isn’t working.  Of course I have some other thoughts on the matter, but I think that would be a good strategy for the House Republicans to get more leverage.
  • I don’t think a smartwatch is a good idea, but the commercials for the Samsung version are kinda cool.
  • ‘CBS Sunday Morning’ had an interesting feature on the Zapruder film.  Two things really stuck out.  The film gave him a lot of guilt as he dreamed being in Times Square hearing a man yell for people to come inside a theater and see the President killed on the big screen.  The other thing that caught my attention was that he sold the rights to the film to LIFE magazine for $150,000 in 1963.  Adjusted for inflation, that’s $1,146,455 in 2013.  In 1975, LIFE sold the film back to the Zapruder for a dollar.  In 1999 the government bought it from the family for $16 million.
  • Adjusted for inflation, a dollar in 1975 is worth $4.35 in 2013.
  • Tempting GIF of the day – Gymnast breaks both ankles (Slow-Motion)‏
  • I actually caught the first episode of Vanillice Ice show in which he lives on an Amish farm, and it was actually better than expected.  Of course there’s a bit of the pedestrian fish out of water element, but it doesn’t play heavy on it and Ice is very respectful.  I guess there are different variations of Amish and how much modern conveniences they avoid as I was a bit confused at times.  For instance, even though there is no electricity there was a modern refrigerator in the kitchen, but it was powered by gas, natural gas, I think.

  • Anytime I see a Cowboy wear 83 I automatically think of Kelvin Martin, AKA – KMart.
  • I got to hang out with one of my college friends who I haven’t seen since 1998.  His entire family flew in from Spokane, WA to attend a funeral in Abilene.  I got to meet this wife, kids, parents, and sister.  He like many others asked why I’m not on Facebook.  Well, my Wise County Blogging Lawyer friend pointed out one reason yesterday.  I’m not one to just have superficial friendships, which I think Facebook encourages, and I don’t want to be unwarrently exposed to a lot of nonsensical rants about politics and the like, and for some reason, I don’t like the idea of being easily found.
  • I only had a few hour to hang out with my friend and his family because they were getting up at 3:00 AM to head to the airport for a very early morning flight so the only place we could meet was at a Buffalo Wild Wings in Bedford.  I haven’t been to a smoking establishment in a quite some time, and while it wasn’t bad, I was reminded how much I hate being in a room of smokers.  Most people were there for a boxing match, I’m surprised people still pay attention to that sport.
