Bag of Randomness for Thursday, June 1, 2017

  • DaughterGeeding turned seven-years-old yesterday. Her brother gave her a fidget spinner and we gave her an activity tracker for kids, both of which she’s been eagerly asking for. She’s going to have an escape room/spy/detective party at GeedingManor on Saturday. Today also happens to be her last day of the school year.
  • I had my second steroid epidural yesterday. This time I felt sorer after the procedure and the anesthesia had a stronger effect.
  • Scott Pelley is out as the anchor of the ‘CBS Evening News’ which bums me out. However, I always thought the anchor desk held him back as his strength is out in the field. He’ll now work as a full-time correspondent on ’60 Minutes’, which I guess means he’s the current day Mike Wallace. The only thing is, the transition of the anchor desk isn’t a smooth one. Pelley is away on assignment and had his office cleaned out, to the surprise of his co-workers, while he was away. I’ve heard lots of stories of why he is being replaced, mainly to how large his contract was and butting heads with his boss. But really, it comes down to ratings which come down to money.
  • Personally, I feel like there’s still a place for the evening news. There’s so much news out there, I feel a sense of information overload. The evening news helps me narrow down things down.
  • Speaking of news people who have lost their job, I noticed former NBC News personality Ann Curry has some bit parts in the new season of ‘House of Cards’. I’m two episodes into the new season.
  • I didn’t know Frank Deford’s work as a writer, only as a great contributor to HBO’s ‘Real Sports’. But I always thought he was trying to pull off a Vincent Price look.
  • Dallas Observer – I Went to Waco and Stayed in a ‘Fixer Upper’ House, and I Don’t Get the Appeal
  • Someone asked what camera I used for the U2 concert. I used to own a DSLR but didn’t like having to change lenses in an instant and felt zooming in and out while recording video wasn’t smooth since it could only be done manually. So I sold my DSLR and bought a Canon PowerShot SX60 HS which has a 65x optical zoom. It’s not a DSLR, but it’s DSLR-like, and at the time, had the second most powerful non-DSLR zoom on the market. In case you were wondering, the best non-DSLR with the most powerful zoom lens was the Nikon COOLPIX P900 with an 83x zoom. At the time, it was more expensive, lacked a feature or two I was looking for, and I just like Canon products more.
  • JFK and Jackie’s granddaughter looks a lot like Jackie with that haircut.
  • At least the person had to pay the admission fee to pull off this stunt, which, in a way, a win for the Museum – Police investigating noose found in African American History Museum
  • The delightful story of how the Scripps National Spelling Bee found a home on ESPN.
  • RollingStone.com – Bono Talks ‘Joshua Tree’ Tour, Trump, Status of U2’s Next Album – “We didn’t know if we could pull off a tour that honors ‘The Joshua Tree’ without it being nostalgic,” the frontman says. “That’s an oxymoron”
    • I didn’t notice it at the time, but Bono talks about how at the start of the show, no images on the screen are used because the band just wanted the audience to focus on the music. I also didn’t put together that before they played the songs off “The Joshua Tree”, the songs leading up to them were pre-Joshua Tree songs.
    • The interviewer asked if there would be a 30th-anniversary tour for “Achtung Baby” in 2021 and I got a kick out of Bono’s answer:
      • I haven’t thought about it, but then again if you’d asked me five years ago about a Joshua Tree one I would have laughed at you. It would have to be called Zoo.Com.

Good point on there still being a place on the evening news.
Vincent Price comment was pretty funny!

  2. Amanda says:

Your comment on the noose in the African American History Museum is nonsensical. I'm sure the museum would have rather lost out on that ticket sale than find such a disgusting display of hate.

    1. Ouch!
    2. Evening news have become a bore, between constant attacks of Trump (my wife is even getting tired of it, and she's a democrat), the Cialis commercials, the extending of life commercials, and the weather over reporting (I guess for the old folks) is a beating. Now what I do is DVR it, even if I'm home, that way I can skip all the non-sense

Also: The National Museum of African American History and Culture is part of the Smithsonian collection, and all those museums are free :-/
