Bag of Randomness for the first day of June 2016

  • DaughterGeeding spent her birthday home from school complete with a visit to the doctor. Those ear infections and sneak up on ya. But we made the most of it, even if it was raining outside and her wanting to have a picnic.

  • WifeGeeding seems to think DaughterGeeding got sick from playing in the rain on Sunday.

  • WifeGeeding and I will be married for a total of 13-years later this month. Last night was the first time she ever hogged the sheets. It’s all downhill from here.
  • When faced with a task or a list of things to do, I’ll usually try to do the most complicated or unpleasant thing first. But sometimes I’ve found it’s better to work on the easiest stuff first to get it out of the way and feel like I’m making some progress. I guess this is somewhat similar to giving a speech or presentation in school, I always preferred to go first to get it over with. Also, a lot of times I was proud of my work and wanted to set the bar. But I’ll humbly admit, I got my rear-end handed to me plenty of times.
  • I caught part of a documentary on KERA last night about Texas courthouses which was quite enjoyable. They stated Tarrant county had the most monumental looking courthouse. Do other states have so many elaborate looking courthouses?
  • TEXAN OF THE YEAR!!!! – DallasNews.com – Man on tractor delivers Whataburger to neighbors trapped by Brazos River flooding
  • This picture of horses on a porch escaping flood waters of the Brazos fascinates me.

  • “CBS Evening News” debuts new theme music – I’ve been a loyal viewer for probably 25-years and have heard the same theme, with some variations, that entire time. This si going to take some getting used to.
  • As a kid, it always bugged me how the map of the earth was all cut up and wavy in the background. One day I finally asked my dad about it and he explained that since the Earth is round, that’s how to properly display such an object on a flat surface.  I think the next ten minutes of my life was spent in an epiphany of bewilderment as it slowly made sense to my nine-year-old mind.

  • Imgur – This might be the most pretentious first ingredient I’ve ever seen.
  • Washington Post – ‘I never wanted to be gay’: Christian musician Trey Pearson comes out, in moving letter to fans
  • Buzzfeed – This Woman’s Breast Implants Popped When She Was Attacked By A Kangaroo
  • Abilene Police throw birthday party for crime victim’s daughter – Nevaeh Rosales, 11, was hiding when her mother, Soña Trucks, 40, was killed shortly before midnight May 22, just minutes before her birthday. The day after the crime, someone broke into the home and stole all of Nevaeh’s birthday gifts.
  • Periscope will ask ‘flash juries’ of viewers to vote on whether comments are abusive – In a novel step to curb harassment on its platform, Periscope said today it would ask viewers of live-streaming broadcasts to evaluate comments that other viewers report as abusive.
  • Atari now makes smart home products – Atari announced today that it’s partnering with Sigfox to get into the Internet of Things business. Together, they intend to create connected home, pet, lifestyle, and safety products. Work on the new products will begin sometime this year; there’s no date yet for when they’ll begin to roll out or exactly what products we might see.
  • GIF – This little girl totally beat up this little boy, and she’s got some technique. Notice how she hits him in the stomach so he’ll move his hands so she can bash his face in.
  • GIF – This poor kid is probably named Charlie Brown, it reminds me of how Lucy pulls the football away from him as he tries to kick it.
  • Disney’s ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ Gets December 2018 Release DateDisney on Monday announced that its Mary Poppins sequel will open on Dec. 25, 2018, more than five decades after the 1964 classic film first played in theaters. The studio also revealed the movie’s title for the first time: Mary Poppins Returns. The musical stars Emily Blunt as the magical nanny opposite Lin-Manuel Miranda. The story will be set in Depression-era London, where a now grown-up Jane and Michael Banks, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by their former nanny following a tragedy in the family that leaves them numb and joyless.
  • Thanks for the ride, Verne – Verne Lundquist stepping down from “SEC on CBS” following 2016 season, will be succeeded by Brad Nessler
    • Thankfully he’s not going into full retirement.
    • Verne is a cool name, there’s not enough Vernes in this world. Granted, Earnest did kind of sully the name.
    • Some of us can still remember when he was the voice of the Dallas Cowboys and working for WFAA as their lead sports anchor. He was replaced by now local legend Dale Hansen. When you combine their two careers, that means WFAA’s lead sports anchor’s job has been held for 48-years by only two people. There used to be a bit of bad blood between the two as Dale somewhat took Verne’s job as he was spending a lot of time away on assignment for ABC. They both did pretty well for themselves.
    • Brad Sham and Verne were in the same broadcast booth, Cowboys fans didn’t know how good they had it, especially when they were in the booth for their second Super Bowl.
    • I love being an adult, but one hard part is dealing with certain aspects that you’d assume would always be there, and once they are gone and replaced, the reality of the shortness of life and how everyone and everything is replaceable and the easily the world moves on stops you in your tracks, at least for a second.
    • If you are a fan of sports, you start to really identify and appreciate certain broadcasters. After several decades and a stack full of memorable moments, it’s kinda neat to think of all the time you’ve spent together.
    • He’s come a long way from Bowling for Dollars.
    • Random Lundquist tidbits:
      • His father was the pastor at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Austin when Verne was twelve.
      • His next door neighbor in Austin was legendary coach D.X. Bible. It would be cool to go by the initials D.X.
      • He’s a member of the Board of Regents for his alma mater, Texas Lutheran University.
      • During the 1992, 1994 and 1998 Winter Olympics, whose rights were held by CBS and TNT, Lundquist and Scott Hamilton served as the announcers for figure skating events. Their performances were parodied by Saturday Night Live cast members Phil Hartman and Darrell Hammond (as Lundquist) with Dana Carvey, David Spade, and Will Ferrell (both as Hamilton): in 1992 with Jason Priestley and 1994 with Nancy Kerrigan and Chris Farley they did a spoof of the Olympics figure skating events, as both Hartman and Myers went “Oh!” when Priestly or Farley (in a pre-recorded performance) did an on-ice pratfall. Lundquist, after seeing the original footage in 1992, commented that Hartman “nailed it dead on.”

When they aired the story on the new theme music I couldn't help but think of the scene from Broadcast News where the composers demo the new news theme. Big finish!

Always been a Lundquist fan. Got to meet him when I worked for Belo in the early 80's. He's a really nice guy. On his final sportscast WFAA surprised him with a gag reel they had Jim Varney do. It was glorious.

  2. Ben W. says:

Yo Geeding, I'ma let you finish, but John Williams had one of the best news-program themes of all time!

Seriously, though – in my mind, his theme for NBC will never be beaten. It's a classic score, and the full version is a fun way to spend 3 minutes.

  3. Bryan says:

My parents always watched the news on Channel 5 in DFW when I was growing up, so I was always a big fan of the Nightly News opening music. It seems like they still use variations on it for the Nightly News and for Today and Meet the Press. I'm rarely home in time to watch the Nightly News, so I don't remember what they're using now.

I'll forever remember Verne for his Olympics coverage.

  4. DF of LL says:

    But…..

Do you remember Verne hosting the show "Bowling for Dollars"?
