We had a yard sale on Saturday. I always have to remind WifeGeeding what’s her goal – to make money or get rid of stuff? It’s always the latter and it helps move the goods.
A few years ago a friend told me he bought donuts and sold them at his garage sale and made a killing. I tried it and didn’t sell one donut, but I did get one heck of a tummy ache.
I started the second season of ‘Orange Is the New Black’ and was appreciative that it gave me the option of a two-minute season one recap. That wasn’t an option for ‘House of Cards’, so maybe Netflix heard their customers’ cries.
My neighbor that’s employed by the local NFL franchise rented a limo for him and his friends to attend the George Strait concert. The guy is about as low key as they come, there’s nothing flashy about him whatsoever, so I wonder if this was an extra special date night. Actually, it’s nice seeming him do something for himself.
SisterGeeding and her husband was nice enough to watch the kids so I could take WifeGeeding out for a date last night. We started the evening checking out the restaurants at Trinity Groves (which is as pretty groovy concept), then walking around the Bishop Arts district and eating at Tillman’s Roadhouse (even catching a mock funeral), and finishing the evening with a stroll at Klyde Warren Park during sunset.
I can never remember the website of all the local television news stations, so I usually just use their call signal in the URL (for example: www.wfaa.com) and that works everytime.
I was asked to speak to our church congregation about the role of a deacon and what has it personally meant to me at yesterday’s service. To my surprise, WifeGeeding recorded it. So if you need something to fall asleep to or criticize this Monday, here you go.
Random things I didn’t know about the Triple Crown until recently:
Each country has their own version
All horses are three years old.
The horse breed used in the races are thoroughbreds. “All modern Thoroughbreds can trace their pedigrees to three stallions originally imported into England in the 17th century and 18th century.”
Of the three races, the Belmont is the oldest.
Of the three races, the Belmont is the last and the longest at a mile and a half (2400 m). So in a way, you can look at the first two kinda like long sprints (Kentucky Derby 2000 m, 1911 m) and the Belmont to require more endurance and stamina. Actually, the Belmont is the only Grade 1 stakes race in America which goes that far. Most of those horses running the Belmont have the mindset of the shorter track and are shocked and don’t have the stamina to finish strong.
Horses usually get four weeks of rest after a race, but due to tradition, these three races are crammed into five weeks. If these dates are changed to spread them out, then you really discount what Secretariat was able to do by winning the Belmont by 31 links. And what’s weirder and angrily pointed out by California Chrome’s owner, the second race is skipped by some horses so they can be rested for the Belmont.
The dirt at the Belmont is sandier to compete against for the humidity and heavy rains. So not only is the race longer, but the surface is harder to run on.
The Lifetime television network plans on airing a show about women giving unassisted birth in the woods. There’s a decent joke in there somewhere but sadly I can’t think of one.
With all the D-Day stuff going on Friday, I did some research on Omar Bradley. I had no idea that he lived until 1981, and was the last of the five star generals/admirals. Here’s a picture of him being saluted by Jimmy Stewart at a Reagan inaugural event (many forget that Stewart was a major general). And I found this picture of Bradley at Omaha Beach at the 25th Normandy Invasion anniversary interesting, I’m just use to seeing him in those WWII style uniforms.
We sell sodas and bottled water at garage sales. That usually does pretty well due to the Texas heat. Plus whatever doesn't sell we put in the fridge for ourselves to drink later.
I wonder what these parents will be thinking if their child dies because they wanted to be reality stars? Up next on History Channel, Self Surgery in the Congo! Because that would be making history!
