Bag of Randomness

  • If someone gave me a list last week of safest places to be and included in that list was a kindergarten class, I would have agree.
  • It’s amazing how much we focus and fear non-American terrorists, when a lot of our tragedies are by white American citizens- Sandy Hook Elementary, Aurora movie theater, Columbine, Tucson.  And even though Fort Hood and Virginia Tech’s shootings were done by non-white individuals, they were still people of our society.  I guess my point is that while we fear people “over there” it’s the people “over here” that we may need to worry about.
  • Westboro Baptist Church plans to picket the funerals of the Sandy Hook victims, here’s hoping folks figure out a way to keep those morons out.
  • Speaking of morons, I heard a lot of folks saying one reason for the tragedy is taking God out of schools.  Newsflash, the God you claim to worship is everywhere, and he was even in church when children were being molested by priests among other things.
  • I was wondering how SNL would open their show regarding the shooting, and they couldn’t have done it more perfectly.  It opened with a children’s choir singing “Silent Night” and then fading to black, and coming back to the choir who had the honor of saying the opening tag line.  It worked because it addressed the elephant in the room and what was on everyone’s mind, but then allowed the show to transition into comedy, a needed escape from reality.  You can watch it here.  Also, that opening act had a plethora of cameos.
  • Random Newtown, Connecticut fact – Bruce Jenner graduated from their high school after attending his junior and senior years, and for 24-years the athletic field was named after him.  Later the town felt snubbed by him when it was time to renovate.
  • I bet most church sanctuaries being built nowadays don’t include an organ.
  • A pastor put on a play at his church loosely based on Chevy Chase’s Christmas Vacation – video with a 15-second commercial
  • A website that translates news into your choice of three levels of English proficiency.
  • If I’m reading this article correctly, HOV lanes will no longer be free, even if you have passengers.
  • I was surprised that there was an abbreviated “60 Minutes” last night to make sure “Survivor” didn’t go too far over time.  Regarding “Survivor” I really had no idea who was going to win when it came down to the final three, and thought it was a little low for Penner to out Lisa about her child career.  I also like how Lisa said on the reunion show that she didn’t want to pray on camera because it just doesn’t translate well. And kuddos to Abby for admitting she has some growing to do.
  • Interesting thought: Attorney General Eric Holder suggest U.S. election officials should register eligible voters automatically
  • It was weird that Cowboys drunk driver Josh Brent was on the sidelines yesterday, but that was only because the mother of the victim asked that Jerry keep him close to the team.  That article also states that Jerry helped pay for the funeral.
  • Use Gigfi to create a Spotify playlist of upcoming bands coming to your city.
  • A Kirk Cameron DVD set regarding boyhood to manhood.
  • The full-time jobs of five NFL referees
  • I didn’t know there was a Lego remover tool.
  • Why you should probably stop eating wheat (it isn’t what it use to be)
  • @JuddApatow: Cool photo of me showing Steve Martin the book he signed for me when I was 13

That Lego remover tool is an absolute MUST HAVE for any parent whose child has Legos – all it takes is the saving of one broken finger nail or a bruised index finger from trying to pry two same-sized pieces apart to make it worthwhile.

And I'm not entirely sure that having 60 Minutes being shorter really helped all that much – the news didn't come on Channel 11 last night until about the same time the Sunday Night football game ended on Channel 5.
