Bag of Randomness

  • Last night after dinner it occurred to me the mail hasn’t been checked.  I asked DaughterGeeding if she would go outside and walk with me to the mailbox.  We held hands as we walked outside and after a few steps past the front door, she stopped and looked at the moon.  I mentioned it was dark outside and she just looked at me with a contemplative face and said, “There are bears outside, I should go in.”  She then let go of my hand and moseyed inside, leaving me all alone to check the mail amongst the bears.
  • Here’s an interesting article about collage football coaches and their salaries.  A few highlights – the cumulative salary of Clemson’s assistant coaches is $4.2 million; average salary for a head coach at a major university is $1.64 million which is up 70% since 2006; four SEC coaches are among the top eight highest paid; Steve Spurrier doesn’t have an agent.
  • In that 60 Minutes piece about college football that I mentioned yesterday, this one stat stood out and was a bit shocking to me: Out of 125 big time college athletic programs, 22 of them were cash flow even or cash flow positive.
  • With its latest episode, “Homeland” is beyond believable.  I think I only watch to make fun of it, but it has me hooked.
  • If you are a Scott Pelley admirer, this is probably the best article about him.  As a father of a daughter, this piece of advice that was given to him jumped out at me, “‘Kid, don’t let this ruin your life. One of these days you’ll be walking your daughter down the aisle and you’ll realize, I don’t know this woman.’”
  • Seth Meyers was at UTA last night, and here’s one funny line, “I am sooo glad you’re not going to secede.”
  • Maine is the only state whose name is just one syllable.
  • Magician Penn Jillette is an atheist and provided his list of six of his favorite books.  One of them happens to be the Bible, but not for a good reason.
  • Software millionaire John McAfee – on the run from Belize’s police – has disguised himself as a Guatemalan street seller and a drunk German
  • My one piece of advice to any high schooler that is trying to search for a college (and I know this advice has no substance whatsoever – Go to a college that has a football stadium larger than your high school football stadium.  And yes, there are a few exceptions, for instance, students in Allen, TX.  Bigger isn’t always better, and there’s a lot of comfort in a small campus (heck, I doubt I could have survived on a large campus), but take a big brave step to be cultured and experience things you normally wouldn’t be exposed to.
  • Yes, Alicia, I know, that girl is on fire.
  • Today is my friend’s birthday, if you have some spare change, would you buy some lemonade?

I met Scott Pelley when he was at WFAA. Nice guy and wasn't your typical TV "talent". Glad to see him get to the top.
