Texas school district, community at odds over student tracking badges

A student locator project at a San Antonio high school could be extended to as many as 112 schools.

The “Student Locator Project” tracks students whereabouts using embedded radio-frequency chips on student ID badges.

The chips transmit a constant signal – tracking students’ exact location – even to the desk they are sitting in.

Without the badges — required to be worn around the neck — students cannot access common areas like the cafeteria or library, and cannot purchase tickets to extracurricular activities.

Many parents and students are protesting the program, which launched Oct. 1.

The district says it’s necessary to improve safety, reduce truancy and track the number of students who attend the schools.
