This very thing happens in David James Duncan's classic novel The Brothers K.
This reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Jerry is trying to figure out what "tractor story" his girlfriend is keeping from him and George suggest that she lost her thumbs in a tractor accident and she now has big toes for thumbs.
