Southwest Airlines ranks as No. 1 brand

Southwest Airlines Co. is flying high once again when it comes to brand recognition, according to a survey by American City Business Journals, the parent company of the Dallas Business Journal.

ACBJ surveyed owners and top executives at small and midsize companies across the nation.

For the second year in a row, Dallas-based Southwest (NYSE: LUV) took the No. 1 spot.

Godfrey Phillips, vice president for research at ACBJ, said the airline ranks No. 1 for several reasons: “One, it’s a value brand, which is critical; two, it was built by an entrepreneur and has an entrepreneurial attitude; and three, they don’t nickel-and-dime you – and (small and midsize business owners) hate to be nickel-and-dimed.”

Other North Texas brands ranking in the top 25 include No. 11 BlackBerry, which is made by Research in Motion (RIM), whose U.S. headquarters is in Irving; and No. 16, Dallas-based FedEx Office.

The Top 25 corporate brands for 2010 are:
1. Southwest Airlines
2. Apple
3. UPS
4. Intuit
5. iPhone
