Open Mic

CaptureMouseMicGosh darn I’m pressed for time, so instead of me blogging, I thought I would leave it up to you to entertain yourselves.

So comment on whatever you want, but here are some ideas:

  • It’s Friday, tell us what your plans are for the weekend.
  • What do you enjoy the most and least about this blog?
  • Why do you continue to visit this blog?
  • Should Pete Rose be allowed in the Baseball Hall of Fame?
  • Predict the Cowboys regular season record.
  • What television show are you looking forward to seeing coming back to air again?
  • Who would you rather have as a lawyer, Ben Matlock or Perry Mason?
  • What was the last movie you saw, and do you recommend it?
  • What’s the best comedy of all time?
  • If you won free air fair and hotel but had to leave this afternoon and return by Sunday night, where would you go?
  • Ketchup or Catchup?
  • How did you hear of the tragic affairs of 9/11?

I was getting ready to go to class and couldn't find my shoes. I went to my room to find them and saw the first tower on fire. Called my mom, told her that the WTC was on fire and went to class. They told us what was happening and then my mom called and told me to go home immediately and she would meet me. A couple friends and I went to a parking lot to try to see if we could see it from where we were. All we could see was the skyline shrouded in smoke. I decided to take my mom's words seriously and headed home. By the time I got home they had both collapsed.

9/11 – I was driving to work with a stop at the barber shop. I heard about the first plane as I was nearing the shop. I saw the second plane hit while I was sitting in the chair getting a haircut. I gotta admit that with the world going to pot right there on TV in front of me one of my biggest concerns was that the barber was still cutting while watching TV. That had the potential to be one REALLY bad haircut.

  3. Rev. Hart says:

9/11 – I was in Michigan to attend a funeral–my mother's best friend had died–when my sister woke me up to tell me to come watch the news, a plane had crashed… I was supposed to fly back to NYC the next day (9/12) but instead hitched car rides later in the week. For the next few months, I visited Ground Zero frequently, watching the cleanup process and standing with the mourners.

Lots of sports to coach and play in…..it's playoff time for Baseball and beginning of season tournaments for Hockey….crazy month, the Bag of Randomness, because it's part of my day, yes but he shouldn't be allowed to be employed by any franchise in the MLB, couldn't care less but hope it's not good, Green Acres (the remake), Lionel Hutz, Spinal Tap and yes, Shakes The Clown, London, BBQ sauce, on the Internet.

  5. Gracie says:

9/11 – Remember watching it on TV, then rushed to the school to pick up my son because at that moment I wasn't sure what was going to happen next.

Bigger than the event itself was the way all Americans came together as a nation afterwards.
Wishing we could bring some of that back now and stop the hatefulness toward one another that is so divisive.

    • My weekend plans are being revised even as I type because of the changing weather
    • I like the blog because it is from a day to a full week ahead of most major news outlets when it comes to presenting humorous, unusual or cool stories and videos. The thing I like the least is that there are no posts on the weekends.
    • I will keep viewing because it is an important part of my day
    • Pete Rose should not be in the Hall of Fame. He knew that gambling is the biggest no-no in sports and he did it anyway…repeatedly.
    • Cowboys record predicted: 9-7.
    • Looking forward to the return of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report
    • Perry Mason hands down
    • Don’t get out to movies much anymore. The most current one I viewed on cable and liked was Ironman.
    • My favorite comedy was Mystery Science Theater 3000
    • Ketchup
*I don’t like to think about the 9/11 news but I was going into work on a late shift and caught it on the Today Show just as I was getting ready to leave the house.

    * How did you hear of the tragic affairs of 9/11? (I was taking my youngest sister to school and I hear the Musers talking about it on 1310. I thought they were talking about the WTC in Dallas at first. I got home in time to see the second plane hit on tv and it shook me to my core. Spent the whole day watching tv at work and my boss was on the runway at LaGuardia when it all went down so he was calling me every 5 minutes to get him out of there. He ended up splitting a rental car with another couple and driving to Texas about 5 days later.

  9. Bryan says:

I like the blog because you are just a regular guy (about my age) posting about real life stuff. I enjoy reading much of what you write because I often relate to it so much.

Cowboys will finish with an 11-5 record, win the division, get a bye in the first round, lose in the second, and Wade will be shown the door.

I was in the middle of a trial, serving on a jury panel, on 9/11. That was the second day of the trial and the judge had us scheduled to report at 11am because she had a hearing. I took advantage of the late start and slept in. I turned on the Today show about 10 minutes after the second plane hit. By 9:30, the baliff had called to let me know that court was cancelled. I spent the rest of the day glued to the TV watching the coverage.

  11. steve in san antonio says:

I was in New Haven, CT when my sister called me from New York (she and her husband lived 2 blocks from Wall Street, where they were working). She said there was a loud explosion down the street at the WTC and that I should turn on the news to let her know what was happening.

Interestingly, after the second plane hit they started evacuating all the buildings on Wall Street and sending people on the streets east toward the Brooklyn bridge. They had no time to go home first. So, there were thousands of people making a trek along nyc streets and over the brooklyn bridge – eerie. EVERYONE was using their cell phones to call loved ones to find out updates or to let them know they were alright – so there was no cell phone signals since the lines were jammed. We couldn't get in touch with or reach them until around midnight.

Then, that whole area was shut down – no in or out. So they stayed in some random hotel in Brooklyn for three days with only the clothes on their back (stores around there were either closed or sold out of all the normal toiletry/can goods stuff).

  12. Dave Slosar says:

I was asleep. Last semester of college I tended to do that since class wasn't until 2pm. When I woke up my voicemail was full of 14 new messages. I listened to each of them and every single one was vague yet filled with horror and shock and sadness in their voice. None of the voice-mails would say specifically what was going on or what exactly occurred. I listened to most of them and finally decided to turn the TV on. The very first image was of Tower 2 getting struck by the plane and a fireball coming out of it. I thought I was tuned to HBO or something but when I reached for the remote I realized it was a news broadcast. From there on I was glued to my couch until a few friends of mine decided to head up to the local University Pub to watch the news and drink a few beers, but mostly we wanted to be together and as college kids think this was a good location to be together. I just remember a lot of sadness followed by a LOT of anger.

I was watching t.v. at home. Immediately called my daddy (a WWII vet) and asked him if this was what it was like when Pearl Harbor was bombed……fear, disbelief, sadness….His answer….."Yes……this is much the same. Pray for our country."
Now my daddy is in heaven, no longer fearful or sad………..and KNOWING that God is taking care of us!

Attend event at my daughter’s school and watch football 

What do you enjoy the most and least about this blog?

Entertainment value and I learn something more often than not.

Only if his sister can induct him….they were inseparable

Predict the Cowboys regular season record:
    10-6

    1) Assuming it only rains – crewing on a sailboat in the two-day Gold Rush Regatta on Lake Grapevine. I hope. Rain only. No thunder. Just rain.

    2) The variety with local flavor.

    3) The variety with local flavor.

    4) It's not a matter of whether he should be "allowed" – clearly he qualifies – I agree that some of what's keeping him out is his attitude, but again, did that keep Ty Cobb out? The game of baseball and its caretakers have many more problems to address than trying to keep Pete Rose out of the Hall.

    5) Cowboys will go 10-6, barely making the playoffs. But this time they'll win their wild-card game. That's about as far as they'll go this time 'round.

    6) Big Bang Theory.

    7) Close one, but I'd have to choose Matlock.

    8) Children of Men – lots of language and graphic violence. Beyond that, though, it was very thought-provoking and a sadly realistic potential look at a dystopian future, even if the premise of how that future came about through virtually instant global infertility was a bit thin. Interesting movie. 3.5 of 5 if I had to rate it.

    9) Monty Python's The Holy Grail.

    10) To see my parents.

    11) What about "Catsup"?

    12) Sitting on the toilet in my apartment, listening to Carl Cassel on NPR. He said something about a plane and the World Trade Center. After I flushed, I went and turned on the TV and within seconds was stunned as I watched the 2nd plane go in live, I think it was NBC. For my parents, it was JFK, RFK and MLK. For me, and I'm sure many of a similar age, the memories like this of the Shuttles Challenger and Columbia and 9/11 are forever seared into my brain.

    Part I
If anyone makes it this far in the comments section, my wife and I were on our honeymoon at Walt Disney World when September 11 took place. We had early park privileges and were in the Animal Kingdom. We heard a few people talking on their cell phones that all flights had been cancelled, but did not think anything about it. We then took the Disney shuttle from Animal Kingdom to the MGM Studios (now renamed something else). This was around 11:00 AM. When we went into the park, we decided to get something to eat straight away. We walked into one of the cafeterias and the food was there, but no workers. About 10 minutes later, a crowd had gathered and the manager told us that due to world conditions, they were not serving lunch. We looked around for the cameras because we thought that we were on some hidden comedy show or something.

    • Shippie says:

      Pt II

Eventually, they evacuated the whole park. The only thing we were told was that the World Trade Centers in NY had been bombed. We still did not understand what happened until we boarded the bus for our hotel room. They had a live feed from the local station broadcasting what happened, over and over. You could have heard a pin drop on a bus where every seat was taken and people were standing in the aisles. Of course the news was saturated with coverage. We finally were able to reach out to our family members to make sure everyone was safe. The next day WDW opened and for the first 4 or 5 hours, there was no laughing, smiling, nothing. Eventually, life returned to the parks. We later learned, not sure from whom, that this was only the second time they have ever evacuated the park since it opened. They gave all of us a one-day ticket to get back into the park. I know I have written a novel, but, back at our hotel we could see I-4 and another major highway and they were completely empty. No cars, no emergency response vehicles….nothing. It is the eeriest thing I have ever seen. That is what happened to us on our honeymoon that is how we will always remember September 11, 2001.

  19. Shippie says:

Oh, by the way, Yes, Pete deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. His accomplishments should be recognized. Moral character and integrity have eluded other hall of fame members as well.

  20. Peggy Campbell says:

Enter text right here 9/11/01 my brother called from our office to ask if I'd seen TV yet that AM (no)–and said "we're at war!" … I guess that was the simplest way to say it looked like the world was changing that moment. We work in Christian broadcasting so the entire day was spent in getting our media streams updated with the events of the day — in a way I think it helped because it was exceedingly urgent activity and, somehow, strangely, I think felt like we were somehow contributing.

There were a number of widows I prayed for every day after 9/11 … even today I remember the family of fireman Orio Palmer, one of those who went against the tide of humanity coming down the stairs to press upward to rescue those above. I don't ever want to forget his sacrfice and that of others — it helps to put a name, face, family members to that. I usually visit the Legacy NY Times site on 9/11 to post a comment to that family so they know we have not forgotten what they lost that day.
