New England is Happy to Finally Get a Sonic

Since it opened, there have been traffic jams late into the night as hungry patrons waited of up to four hours at times to get their order in.

About 54,000 customers showed up in the first 10 days, Sonic estimated.

Frankly, I think Sonic is highly, highly over-rated.

And I wonder if patrons fall into the same tipping dilemma I experience when a car hop does nothing but bring me my food.

K, as someone living in NE I think i can tell you why this is such big news. For the past 5 years Sonic has run ads in new England – with nary a restaurant in sight. And regardless of how Sonic may actually taste, their food looked AMAZING broadcast across our yankee screens. They became a fast food forbidden fruit and now they are finally here and available. I wonder if this is just a case of pent up demand actually working?

I used to never tip at Sonic. My little sister got a job there in high school and read me the riot act. Since then, I tip around 50 cents per order.

    I don't tip people paid a non-tipping hourly wage.

and don't underestimate the power of Happy Hour at Sonic.

Ya know Keith, I really like reading your blog. But this…this is unacceptable. How dare you use the words "overrated" and "Sonic" in the same sentence!

In all seriousness, Allison is completely correct. Whoever is behind Sonic's marketing campaign is a genius. I've been seeing Sonic commercials in NJ for at least 8 years. The first sonic within 300 miles of us opened about a year ago. They taunted us with commercials for almost a decade and when they finally open one, it's like releasing a pack of starving wolves. When the first Sonic in North Jersey opened, about 6 months ago, the traffic report every night for a week was "10 mile backup on Rt. 17 due to the opening of an out-of-area fast food chain." They're creating chaos every time they open one around here. Not going to lie, I'd wait hours for a cherry limeade!
