Police say there may be little they can do to help a Des Moines man climb out of tax purgatory where forces beyond his control have swallowed up his tax refund of $2,696.
Harry Rios told Des Moines police that a tax preparer with H & R Block copied his bank account number incorrectly on his tax forms and his refund was deposited into the bank account of another person.
Police Detective Terry Mitchell said the money apparently has been spent or at least moved out of that account.
“They told me to call the police,” he said. Officers took a report that they labeled “fraud – theft.”
The question is who is committing fraud? The person who spent the money may have believed they were spending their own tax refund, Mitchell said.
“I’ve got people”…incompetent people…they will cause my money to go in the wrong account…and I will lose my tax refund…but at least “I’ve got people”
Oh my! I am waiting on my refund, it was supposed to go into my account on friday, and it did not. I called the IRS and they said it was put into my tax preparer's account!!!!! I got my taxes done at H&R block! I called them and of course they aren't open until the middle of next week! I called the 800 number and the lady told me that they have no account it could have went into and that I should call HSBC.. I sure hope they find my money!!!!!!! Or I am going to be so pissed!
