Baptist preacher says birth control is ‘murder’

FORT WORTH — A Southern Baptist leader and teacher has a message for women: Taking birth control pills is “murder” and a “sin.”

The opinion of Dr. Thomas White is reverberating around Baptist circles, and causing at least one Tarrant County pastor to publicly disagree.

Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth shapes the Baptist pastors of tomorrow, determining the future of the church.

That’s why Dr. White’s sermon earlier this month is getting so much attention.

Dr. White is a mentor at the seminary, charged with helping future pastors make the right decisions.

I have to admit this quote in the article got my attention:

“This is fundamentalism run amok, and I’m concerned that once was the world’s largest theological seminary is degenerating into a Baptist fundamentalist indoctrination camp.”

I just heard his talk (the link is buried in the article) and it was…interesting. First, he ties in the idea of a house and the Lord laboring to build it and then a family and says the two are intertwined. Then he goes on an interprets the house to mean about a dozen other things (including, surprise, Politics).

His beef, according to the talk, is that the Pill prevents implantation by day seven. Yes, you can buy anti-implantation pills (most notably the day after pill from a few years ago), the standard ‘Pill’ doesn’t prevent it (http://www.fhi.org/en/RH/Pubs/booksReports/methodaction.htm), and it’s shocking to see a fertilized egg that can sustain itself without implantation by day seven.

Ironically, he goes on to say that he wants people to be educated. I think he needs to get his facts a little straighter.

While I would never publicaly teach or preach something like this; it is worth Christians looking into.
