Bag of Randomness

  • WifeGeeding and I early voted yesterday.
  • There sure were a lot of voters, but my wait in line was less than two minutes.  The Denton Country folks sure are organized, all they had to do was swipe my drivers license and I was verified, then all I had to do was sign my name.
  • A first time voter checked in, and the election official announced “First time voter here!” and everyone started applauding.
  • We had the option of choosing a paper ballot or using the electronic ballot.  Even though I don’t completely trust the electronic ballot I decided to use it.  I just want some sort of receipt.  I figured since my vote counts but doesn’t matter due the stupidity of the Electoral College it was worth it just to experience it.  I thought it would be touch screen, but instead you used a wheel and buttons to select your vote.
  • Before I could use the electronic ballot, I had to enter a four digit pin given to me after my DL was scanned.
  • Like I did during the primaries, I decided to use my camera phone to capture my vote because of the historical significance of the candidate I was voting for.  You know, voting for a Muslim and all.
  • But get this . . . I was wearing my Dallas Mavericks t-shirt.  Irony?
  • I saw a Sam Houston on the ballot, it’s almost un-Texan to not vote for Sam Houston.  I always thought it was cool how the original Sam Houston was a president of other country (Texas when it was such), a U.S. Senator, and a state governor.
  • I wonder which year the first online ballet will happen.  Lots of security issues, but it’s one interesting concept to think about.  Imagine the record number of people that will vote.
  • I see a lot more “NoBama” bumper stickers as opposed to “McCain Palin” bumper stickers.  Nothing like tearing down the opposing candidate as opposed to building up your own.  But then again, I’ve been guilty of doing the same.
  • That last sentence sure did have a lot of oppose to it.
  • I was not aware that there was such as thing as a bowling league at the White House.  Link
  • I’ve just discovered the Virtual Thesaurus – it’s a pretty cool tool you should check out.
  • This will be shocking to my fellow Texans, but yesterday was the first time ate guacamole.  It appears that I wasn’t missing much.
  • In the Mexican restaurant I heard a Spanish version of Boys II Men’s On Bended Knee.
  • Following that song was the Bee Gee’s How Deep is Your Love.
  • Sing a few lines of the song I just mentioned and it will be stuck in your head all day.  Now you have me to thank.
  • $150,000 in clothes and accessories in six weeks – I guess that reflects everyday small town hockey mom American values.  That’s a lot of beer money for Joe Six Pack.  Imagine the amount of lipstick that could be bought for all the pigs out there?  At least the clothes are going to charity after the election.
  • If you compare that amount to Sen John Edwards’ $400 haircut (remember that fiasco?), Edwards would have to get that same $400 hair cut every week for a little over 7 years to match that $150,000.  That’s the equivalent of $2500 a day for clothes.  Source
  • It would crack me up if she showed up wearing sweats today.
  • Walking the walk.  Link
  • And what the heck is she doing wearing a Democratic scarf?
  • For those of you that like James Dobson and Sarah Palin, he interviewed her recently and Beliefnet has part of it here.  Although I thought the “Amazing Palin-Dobson” title was a bit much.  She states that she’s confident God will do the right think on election day.
  • Guaranteed she tops Barbara Walter’s Most Intriguing People list, but will grant her an interview.
  • And she would like to name a child Zamboni.  Link
  • Translate “Barack Obama” from English to German and you get Rudy Giuliani.  Link
  • I was able to fill my car up with gas for under $35 for the first time in a very long time.
  • I was once told by someone that I should admire a man that takes a stance and never waiver from it.  I would have to disagree.  I find it just as noble when a person can have a certain stance, be exposed to do an alternative view, and after thoughtful research revise that decision or stance.
  • Man, I still get a lot of comments on that Tony Romo post, more so since the injury.  Those commenters are so innocent that I almost feel I can’t laugh.
  • Here’s an interesting article on Billy Graham’s daughter, Anne Graham Lotz.  What makes it interesting?  I would say what she has to say about female preachers.
  • During a commercial break from Pushing Daisies I flipped to the World Series and saw the Back Street Boys singing the National Anthem.  Really, that’s the best you could dish out for your first game of your first ever World Series, Tampa?
  • During that channel flipping I saw that Kitt turned into a truck.  Man that show is stupid.
  • I’m sure only my Philly friends George and Kevin will know this, but did you know the Phillies were originally called the Quakers?  It makes things interesting when they play the Padres.  Not quite a holy war though.
  • I’m really enjoying watching Friday Night Lights on DirecTV’s 101.  Not only is it commercial free, but the storyline is so much better this year than it was last year.  Heck, I almost cried last night.  Coach Taylor = Integrity
  • It has a very good instrumental soundtrack btw [artist Explosions in the Sky].  But the song Devil Town that plays during one of it’s commerical is quite captivating.  YouTube
  • I had a coach in high school that taught english and he allowed us to watch The Hand that Rocks the Cradle even though it was rated R because he thought it delivered a good message or something like that.
  • Not only do those DIrecTV commercials that recreates old movies crack me up, but I think it’s a pretty clever advertising idea.
  • Ever taken a close look at a bag of Cascadian Farm frozen broccoli?
  • Our local late news starts at 10:00 pm, with the exception of our local Fox station that has a 9:00 and 10:00 pm broadcast.  With the World Series on, I wonder if they like not having to do a 9:00 pm broadcast even though they have to stay a bit later to do the 10:00 pm.
  • Saw a preview of the Simpsons Treehouse of Horrors and it looks like they are going to do a parody of The Gream Pumpkin Charlie Brown – looks good.
  • For some reason I just couldn’t stop watching this video, I had to watch it all the way through.
  • I’ve only known one person in my life that had shoes resoled.

There was also a year when the “mascot”/logo was the Blue Jay. It was the result of a fan contest to create a new logo, but there was a legal issue with John Hopkins University, whose mascot was the blue jay, so back to the traditional Phillies “P” it was.

Also I can not wait for the newest Simpsons Treehouse of Horror episode. There is a long history of The Simpsons paying homage to Peanuts, but this one looks like it will be the best.

FYI: It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown will be on ABC next Tuesday at 8pm EST.

Only one person that has had shoes resoled…that is because you are still young. As your peers age they will start investing in higher quality shoes/boots. On these, when the soles wear out the rest of the shoe/boot is still in good shape, therefore resoling makes sense. When you pay less than $100 for a pair resoling is usually not very cost effective.

I like Pushing Daisies. But does it bug you that they play background music through almost the ENTIRE show? I listen for it now. And it bothers me.

    1) Translate Barack from Swahili into English and you get “That One”.
    2) When I started working in an office and was required to wear a suit I purchased two pairs of expensive plain-toed, lace shoes: one pair of black and one pair of brown. The upper portion never wore out and never went out of style. Over the next 20 years I had them re-soled and put new heels on them numerous times. They still look like new. I’m thinking about putting them in my will. And there’s no way I would throw out an expensive pair of cowboy boots that are completely broken in when they just need to be resoled. Maybe I’m frugal or maybe it’s just a generational thing.
    3) I can’t imagine an internet ballot. First, there is no way to guarantee a hacker wouldn’t be able to pull off an enormous, nationwide election fraud. If it was big enough, the election might have to be repeated. Second, if voters are so lazy and disinterested that they don’t want to get off their sofa for one day every four years to vote for their next president then they probably shouldn’t be voting [just my opinion].

    1. I had a hard time getting McCain/Palin stickers, it took 3 weeks before they mailed. I think that’s why I don’t see that many.

    2. The University of Pennsylvania are still the Quakers. Kind of hard to work that into a fight song, so we sing “Hang Jeff Davis” instead.
